Update 3:39pm ET (by Alanah): There have emerged some conflicting reports on this news. The reports referenced below are from the London Free Press and Yahoo! Sports, and seem definitive, but others are disputing its accuracy. We’ll update with more as soon as possible. Our hearts go out to the Jenkins family, whatever the circumstances currently are.
Update: Jenkins is still fighting for his life, and George has updated this story here.
There were some conflicting reports about this so I held off on it, but it’s terrible news: Per the London Free Press’s Morris Dalla Costa and Yahoo Sports’ Neate Sager, Belle Tire AAA hockey goaltender and London Knights prospect Ian Jenkins has passed away at 15 years of age:
Ian Jenkins, considered the best young goaltender in USA Hockey’s development program and the London Knights’ second-round pick in the recent OHL draft, suffered a major head injury in a pickup truck accident near his home on Thursday and Friday night was taken off life support. Jenkins, 15, underwent surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor following the accident.
“What an overwhelming response for my son Ian. Thank you,” said Joel Jenkins’ Facebook page on Friday night.
“He had a massive injury to the right side of his head,” continued the posting on the Facebook page. “The brain would not stop swelling. He was a wonderful boy that touched the lives of many. He forever will live in mine and my family’s heart.”
Reports say friends, including members of his Belle Tire U-16s, and family members went to the hospital on Friday to say their goodbyes.
He was a kid from Ypsilanti who will be missed:
“Your stomach just drops,” co-owner/GM Mark Hunter said. “As a parent, you just can’t believe this can ever happen. You can talk about competitive hockey and everything, but this kind of thing just puts life in perspective.”
