“Because It’s The Cup”

from Adam Gretz of Eye On Hockey,

According to a report from Sports Business Daily, the NHL is set to roll out a new advertising campaign this week for the upcoming playoffs that will replace the “history will be made” commercials than ran during the past two postseasons….

The new ads will have the tagline, “because it’s the cup” and will reportedly be aimed at “casual, and non-hockey fans.”

It remains to be seen what the content of the new ads will be, but given the tagline it seems like they could involve something that deals with pain and sacrafice (something like Eric Belanger pulling his own tooth on the bench and then returning to the game minutes later), but with the main target being “casual and non-hockey fans” that seems like it might be a stretch.

It’s this kind of lame attitude that has lead to an increasingly watered down product as it is. Guess what, non-hockey fans give less than a shit about the Cup…or the redline, obstruction, the trapezoid, awarding points to losers etc.

How about pandering to the actual fans of the game who care passionately about and recognize it for what it is, the single most amazing sport in the world.

But yeah, go Coyotes!!!

Yeah, I’m tired of all the pandering to non fans.  I know the NHL has to market, but focus on making the game better and the product will speak for itself.
