Kukla's Korner Hockey

A New Style In D.C.

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

In a way, it’s rather sad. The circus has officially left town.

For four or five years there, the Washington Capitals were one thrilling high-wire act, their stars capable of creating chances at both ends of the ice. You score four? We’ll score five. Six? Yep, we can top that.

It was a blast. Unleash the Fury and all that. But it is over.

That doesn’t mean the Caps won’t be a winning hockey club this season or in seasons to come. It’s just hard to imagine they’ll be as enjoyable and imaginative and, at their best, electrifying.

Those days are gone. Now, it’s Dale Hunter hockey. Get it out and get it in deep. Bang bodies. Cycle. Take it hard to the net. Bang some more bodies.

Gotta wonder when someone running that team comes to their senses and puts Semin back with Ovechkin and Backstrom.  Those 3 were unstoppable together, then early last year Semin was taken off that line and all 3 have struggled rather mightily since.  Backstrom was over 100 points 2 years ago and barely hit 70 last season, Ovechkin has seen his goals cut in half, and Semin is a ghost this year.  Doesn’t seem that hard to figure out to me.

Caps fans are going to hate Dale Hunter Hockey.

Not only is it boring, but it doesn’t work very well and they’re going to continue to lose games.

Really stop and think about the Caps as a Dump n’ Chase team.  Think about it.  Makes no sense at all, does it?

I love the idea of playing smallish skill players as power forwards (provided that it is some other team doing it and not one that I watch and support).
