It may only be preseason but through two games overseas, the New York Rangers are 2-0, have scored six goals and have allowed just two.
For Rangers’ fans, this should not come as a surprise as the team has always seemingly done well abroad. In the 1993-94 season, the Rangers went to London, England, for a two-game set with the Toronto Maple Leafs and won both games in convincing fashion.
During the 2008-09 season, the Rangers went overseas again and won a few preseason games before winning their first two regular season games over the Tampa Bay Lightning to start their season 2-0. It must be something in the water over there, eh?
Anyways, while the team has yet to lose, the club still has plenty to work on. In their game on Thursday, goaltender Martin Biron was terrific as he picked up the shutout and was extremely good during a big penalty kill.
The same could also be said of Henrik Lundqvist’s performance over his former team Frolunda. Frolunda was in the game the whole way and at one point, looked like they could come away with a victory.
The team needs to continue to work on the power play and also work on finishing their chances, two things they struggled with last season. With big opening regular season games coming up agains the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks coming up on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8, these things will need to be ready to go as both the Kings and Ducks have a lot of offense and special teams play to offer.
Before the team’s two regular season games, the Blueshirts will take on HC Slovan tomorrow (11:00 a.m. on MSG) and EV Zug on Monday, October 3 (2:00 p.m. on MSG). Should the team come away with two victories, it could be a nice confidence booster going into the regular season on a four game unbeaten streak abroad.
Hopefully when all is said and done, the Blueshirts will come home having won each of their games overseas and on a pretty good unbeaten streak.
