Flaming Fantastic Start….

One can surmise that league parity is in full swing. The Calgary Flames have finished in second place for both of their matches to start the 2011-2012 season. While we all know how deep and talented this year’s edition is, the Flaming C have struggled in achieving 60 minutes of consistent play, thru 120 minutes of regulation.

While congratulations are in order for Roman Horak and Derek Smith for making the big club to start the season, the results as a whole have been wholly disappointing. The Flames opened the season with an electrifying pregame show and got a jump on their Penguin counterparts in period 1. In fact the Vegas odds of them winning the Cup improved to 5 to 2 at one point. Needless to say, the wheels fell off. I’m not going to recap every period of every game in this medium, but lets just say that the Flames aren’t real big 2nd period superstars thru 2 games. They staged a voracious comeback in the 3rd but fell 5-3 with a Jordan Staal e-netter capping the scoring. The highlights included the conglomeration of the greatest fans in the world, under one swayed back saddle-style roof.
Turkey Day/Columbus Day afternoon, the St Loo Blues hosted the Flames in an afternoon encounter that again started well. Scoreface Glennie notched his 2nd in 2 (on pace for 82) and the natives were sensing a road win with Henrik Karlsson between the pipes. Then came period 2… I’m not sure if the boys are looking ahead to dining at Sizzler or what’s going on, but they really aren’t firing on all cylinders just yet. Let’s hope that David Moss can find some chemistry on the top line with Jarome and Monsieur Tanguay. His play was improved against the Blues but doubt many have Mosser pegged as a top line center worthy of 1007 point uber-star Iginla, but let’s just have a little faith in B-Sutz. A 5-2 final score at the hands of the Blues can only leave the fans and squad a disheartened but the sun will rise again. Yes- haters of Canada’s team- they have played terrible but they started last season with the same miserable results and they narrowly missed out on the playoffs. I think maybe its time to grab one of the Flames bobbleheads from your collection, give it a hug and a nuzzle, and foresee positive things ahead. If no lucky charms are laying around, just gain solace in knowing things could be worse, you could be an Oiler’s fan. Yuck.

May the force be with you,

Scooter Dingman
