Shoud the Devils target Shane Doan?

With Rick Nash signing with the New York Rangers and Alex Semin signing in Carolina, two of the top offensive free agents are officially off the market. With the Devils losing Zach Parise to the Minnesota Wild, do the Devils need to bite at the chance to sign Shane Doan if he decides to leave the Coyotes?

Last season, Doan finished the year with 50 points (22 goals, 28 assists). It is less than Parise’s 69 points, (31 goals, 38 assists) but the Devils lost a star-caliber player after Parise signed in Minnesota.

Doan’s age is also not on his side. He will turn 36 during the season, where Parise was only 27. Still, Doan is the best offensively skilled player left on the free agent market, and a fresh start in New Jersey may be what he needs to rekindle some of the fire inside of him.

Doan is reportedly asking for as close to a 4 year – 30 million dollar contract which is quite a lot, even for him. Still, if the Devils feel they need the scoring presence in the absence of Parise, would you want the Devils to reach out to Doan and try to reach an agreement?

1) Rangers
2) Doan’s leaving a financially unstable franchise, why would he go to another one?
3) HAHA

Good article, fair point about Doan being a somewhat viable replacement for Parise, but knowing the connection between the Rangers staff and doan (Schoenfeld was Doan’s coach back in the day in Phoenix, Torts was an assistant under Schoenfeld, Maloney former assistant GM of the Rangers) I could see Doan ending up in NYR. Especially if they feel they want to add another scoring threat, although I don’t see where he fits or why they would need him. Jason Arnott to me is a better fit as Rangers need bottom-6 help.

Well, Nash wasn’t exactly signed by the Rags. He was acquired via trade.

If the rumor regarding Doan’s target salary is true, I wish you folks the best of luck trying to sign him. And I don’t mean that with any bitterness intended. Seriously, good luck.

I do not want doan for that kind of money. No question he is a great character to have in your locker room but 50 points for that kind of money is just not right. I could see the rangers going after him since they have about as much offensive talent as the blue jackets, maybe less with gaborik out now lol.

I think the Devil’s will be all right even without Parise. I’ve got a hunch they will be a more defense oriented team with good enough players to score without the likes of whats on todays feeble FA market. As for the Rangers and Nash, seems to me they will be the cadillac stuck in the mudpit on an off road racing course. Watch them get 1st round eliminated if they even make the playoffs!
