I’ve been listening to Cam Janssen’s radio interview and reading responses and reactions for most of the day, and since I have a minute to sit down outside of a work, I want to throw my two-cents into the ring.
It’s pretty easy to sum up what Janssen said: idiotic. I don’t personally known Janssen and how he acts on and off the ice, but he certainly did himself no justice after this interview went viral.
He needs to understand that as a professional athlete, he is in the public eye with everything he does. Whether it be going golfing, eating lunch at McDonalds or conducting an interview where you decide to share some homophobic views and let everyone know you intentionally target the head of an opponent even though its the exact thing the NHL is trying to eliminate from the game.
His comments towards the Los Angeles Kings was nothing more then firing rubber bullets. I don’t know if Janssen forgot, but in 48 games he only registered 1 assist and didn’t even see the ice in the playoffs. If the Los Angeles Kings are “the fat chicks you regret from the night before” or whatever he called them, what exactly does that say about him?
The apology sent out by the
Devils PR staff
, er, I mean Janssen *wink wink* seemed as half-assed as could be. It’s easy to jot down that you didn’t mean anything you say, that you’re sorry and that you support the NHL and their partnership with the You Can Play project. If you haven’t seen the apology presented, I have posted it below, courtesy of the New Jersey Devils.
“Earlier this week, I participated in an internet-based radio show in which I used some poor judgment which I now regret. The New Jersey Devils were unaware of this interview, which I arranged myself. I would like to apologize for my poor choice of language. The tone of the interview was very casual and off-color, and I lost focus on what is and is not acceptable and professional. I am deeply sorry to anyone who was offended by my language. Moving forward, I hope to eliminate that type of language from my vocabulary. I would also like to take this chance to express my support for the work the You Can Play project is doing, and for the gay community in general. I apologize for the embarrassment my comments have caused to the New Jersey Devils management, as well as my teammates.”
Overall, I sincerely hope that Janssen is embarrassed that all of this came to light and that he now looks like a homophobic, head-hunting jackass. He did nothing for his reputation which already had him listed as sort of a punk. The creator of the You Can Play project has come forward and said that Janssen should be given another chance for coming out and apologizing. To each his own I suppose, because at least to me, it’s tough to see Janssen any other way right now. Maybe if he does some sort of rehabilitation work to help his reputation things can change, but for now he just looks stupid.

I am an all around NHL fan. I love to watch Atlantic Division, and root for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just because I cheer for the Flyers, doesn’t mean I don’t keep up with the other teams in the division, specifically the New Jersey Devils. Devils Advocate will provide you with the most important Devils news, filled with my opinion about the selected topic.
