MHL Season 12 Draft Recap

Well, the big draft for season 12 of the Moose Hockey League is done. Even though I wasn’t eligible for this draft, being a rookie in the league, I still wanted to see how things went down. Since this draft has a major impact on the MAHL draft. With the new rule in place that did away with MHL and MAHL team-affiliations.

Instead there were three extra rounds at the end of the draft, where team captains could select players they would have the rights to call up from the MAHL should they need them to fill a roster spot for a player who can’t make a game. As I said, even though I wasn’t really involved in this draft, it was still very interesting, and very entertaining, as I was not disappointed.

Things got kicked off pretty early, I woke up at 3PM and checked into the MHL website (www.mooseonice.com) which already had a new temporary main page up, with two buttons, one labeled “Draft Central” and the other being a link to the main site. The draft link dropped me right into the chat channel, where I selected my nickname for the chat, and then I was off and running. The chat lobby was well set-up, with button links to the pre-show video, and draft radio show, for when they went up, among other things, like a link to the main site, and the draft pool spreadsheet.

Even though it was a good six hours before the pre-show began, there were still about 30 people in the chat already, just sitting around chatting and doing other things as we waited for the draft to start. That made for some good fun, especially once some the of NHL preseason games started going, as we began talking about those games and other things, as we all eagerly awaited the start of the pre-show.

The guys running things hit a few technical difficulties with the pre-draft show, but it got going about 10 minutes after it was supposed to be up and running. They put together a very solid, and very funny, pre-draft show, as they began with quick bios of each team captain, before going into the 6-man discussion panel. There were also a number of other good segments to break things up a bit. Overall it was very well put together, but once that wrapped up, the draft and live radio show began, which is when the real fun started, and the draft chat peaked at 100+ players.

Listening in to the live radio stream and watching the picks happen in real-time in the chat room was very, very cool. Even though I only knew a handful of the players, as I’m just a rookie in the league, but the media team hosting the live radio steam of the draft helped to give a pretty solid introspective on just about every single draft pick, unless it was on the rare occasion when even a player they didn’t even know much about was drafted. However, they watch the chat and are taking phone calls, texts, and other messages left and right though, so they stayed on top of things, and I imagine it was a pretty hectic couple of hours for them. Very impressive job though.

Here are all of the first round picks. I’d get into more, but I’m going off a Google docs spreadsheet, so I don’t have the luxury of copy and paste even. Anyway, here were all of the first round selections.

Pick # - Captain - Selection

1. cousi87 - NJSki711
2. EWTU Eric - hergz96

As I’m sure you’ll notice, that wasn’t all of the captains, as a few made trades out of the first round well before the draft. Although, if you want to see the full draft results, along with the pre-show video, and recording of the live radio show as the draft went down, they are all at the top of the MHL main page at the moment. So feel free to check them out at the above link I provided.

Overall, the MHL’s draft night was pretty fun, and I wasn’t really even involved in it, although I did get a mention on the live radio stream. Due to what looks like will be a major shortage of goaltenders, and myself being one of a handful of full-time Gs available in the MAHL draft on Sunday. As I figured would be the case online in NHL 12 in general, once the news broke that skater and goalie progression cards were going to be split now. Which is another reason I wanted to watch the entire draft, since I knew that the last three rounds, which were saved for MAHL call-up rights, would have a major impact on whatever my current stock might be in Sunday’s MAHL draft.

That draft should be very interesting, as there are a few less teams, and the pool will consist of everyone who didn’t make the cut in the main MHL draft, as well as all of the other rookies coming into the league like myself. Expect a recap of that draft too.

I’d write more on yesterday’s draft, but I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning (as of the time of me writing this) so I can’t be up too late, as I’ve got to be up rather early in the morning.

Quickly though, in a semi-NHL 12 related note, the game received it’s first real “patch”. Which did the following things…

- Fixed the Desync/Looping issue
- Fixed the HUT card pack issue
- Fixed a crash that would sometimes occur when using the Winter Classic stadium in HUT

Anyway, sorry to cut it short, but as I said, I’ve got to be up early today for that appointment, and then work as hard as I can on my NHL 12 goaltending skills, as there will be plenty of scouting going on between now and Sunday’s MAHL Draft, which I’m very excited about, as the MHL continues to impress as the best player-run league in the online hockey world.

Great write up Doug. Draft ‘weekend’ is ther biggest event each season. Very exciting and stressful / busy for the MEC lol. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Good luck this season!

About Cluster Pucks

Here at Cluster Pucks, you find a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but it’s all hockey. I mostly try and stick to the rather insane task that I’ve given myself of attempting to cover the CHL, NCAA Hockey, as well as the EA Sports Hockey League, in addition to other EA Sports NHL-series related news. So yeah, unless I specifically plan something, you never know what you might get from me on a day to day basis. I tend to write pretty thorough and in-depth posts more often than not that. I can also be pretty opinionated at times, so feel free to disagree with me however you wish, just don’t be surprised when I comment back and keep the discussion going.

Before I came on board here at Kukla’s Korner, I spent 10 years of my life working as a writer and director in the independent film world. I don’t have any sort of formal degree, or hockey writing background other than my work here. Although I’ve always loved hockey and writing, so it seemed like the perfect fit. I’m always eager to hear what the readers think, so if you’ve got a question, comment, idea, whatever, just feel free to email me anytime at doug@kuklaskorner.com
