Benny and the Jets

The Winnipeg Jets’ season opens this afternoon. Fans decked out in Jets gear, old and new, have been streaming downtown for hours, pre-gaming the pre-game and getting ready for what will undoubtedly be a historic day for this city.
It’s hard to explain the electricity and excitement felt throughout the city - both by those attending the game as well as the rest of us. Since Thursday’s season kickoff at The Forks, the momentum has been steamrolling toward puck drop. There’s not much more that can be said about the importance of today’s game to this city and its hockey fans. All that’s left is to sit back and take it all in - unless, of course, you’re one of the lucky 15,004 that managed to get tickets.
For a quick history of how we got to this point, check out Fuelled by Passion, a CBC documentary on the departure and return of the NHL in Winnipeg. It’s streaming right here.
Go Jets go!

About Benny and the Jets
Fifteen years ago, Ben's beloved Winnipeg Jets left town. He begrudgingly turned to the Montreal Canadiens for comfort and found none, and is now struggling to find a place in his heart for the Winnipeg Jets v2.0.
Ben is a Winnipeg-based freelance writer that writes a lot about wine and beer. Expect his son to be drafted into the NHL in 2025.
