Why Does This Sentence Matter?

Pens/Devils.  29 January 2008.

In the first game for both teams following the All-Star break, the Penguins defeated the Devils for the fifth straight time in New Jersey.

More?  Sure. Interesting stuff, eh?  I know you’re digging it.

New Jersey, which played without captain Jamie Langenbrunner (flu), wasted the fourth career two-goal effort from forward Mike Rupp, who had no points in 35 games. Martin Brodeur stopped 23 shots.

A little bit more.  Stay with me.  Let’s go back in time, like on Lost, but just one week.

Fire and Ice

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has pulled out of the Sunday’s NHL’s All-Star Game in Atlanta to deal with family matters. Brodeur said he informed Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello of his decision about a week ago, but it was not announced by the NHL until today. Brodeur will be replaced by Boston goaltender Tim Thomas.

“It’s a tough decision,” Brodeur said. “I’ve got some stuff going on with the family back home, so it’s something I just wanted to make sure I was here to take care of. It’s definitely a tough one. It’s such a great weekend to miss. That’s why I waited so long. I tried to avoid making that decision, but I think it’s for the best.”

Anybody see my point?  Get something clear. This is not about ripping Marty Brodeur, or being insensitive to whatever the family issue was.

It is all about pointing out Little Gary Bettman’s hypocrisy and ineptitude.  Not difficult to find now, is it?

Thanks to A2Y reader, DecCap19, for the leg work.  Nice job, man.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
