GDT - Game #73: Red Wings host Blues (7:30)

The Red Wings are smoking since the Olympic break, posting an 8-2-1 record in that span (5-0-1 in last six).  DET’s best players are carrying the water; Henrik Zetterberg has 15 points in that stretch, with Pavel Datsyuk adding 11 points and captain Nicklas Lidstrom chipping in 10.

If STL want to keep any realistic playoff hopes alive, they must win tonight at the JLA.  A regulation defeat would leave a 10-point deficit with nine games remaining between STL and DET for the 8th spot.  STL are incredible road warriors posting an NHL 2nd best road record of 22-11-4.  The Conk Block has been a wall of late, in his last two starts, he is 2-0, 1.50 GAA, and a 0.948 save %.

CGY won last night, so the DET lead is down to 2 points, tonight is their game in hand.  Jimmah is starting his 20th consecutive game tonight, looking for win number 30. In his last 6 starts, he is 5-0-1, with a 1.63 GAA, and a 0.935 save %. Cleary should play, Eaves is out, and E-52 is in.

No GDT for Game 74 (MIN), or Game 75 (@ NSH); I’ll be in Hockeytown.  Some Swedish Revenge tonight?  Game On Bitches.

Standings:

DAL beat NSH last night, 3-1.  NSH played game 74 last night, and have 89 points, 4 better than DET.  CGY beat, and put a fork in the Ducks, 3-1.  CGY played game 73, and are 2 points behind DET.  COL hosts LAK tonight.

Not much in the STL news, but there is this:

The Blues are coming off a devastating 3-2 loss to Nashville on Sunday, in which they squandered a 2-1 lead in the last 3 1/2 minutes. But they are tied for the most road wins (22) in the NHL and are 4-0-1 against the Red Wings.

and this:

Given that the Blues return home for a Thursday night game against Los Angeles, given that Conklin has stopped 72 of 75 Detroit shots in two wins, and given that he went 2-0 on the recent New York trip, it seems plausible Blues coach David Payne might split the difference and give Conklin tonight’s assignment. But Chris Mason also has two wins and has played well against Detroit. On Tuesday, the skipper was not tipping his hand.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
