GDT - Game #7:  Red Wings at Blue Jackets (7:00)

Detroit (5-1-0) are coming off a 7-1 pasting at DC.  The Wings (playing the tail of a B2B) claim they held their own for the first two periods, and they did outshoot the Caps 26-14 through two frames.  But the score at the end of two was 4-1, and the Wings gave up 7 goals on 25 shots.  Please, do not ever put special and teams in the same sentence. Spin that contest however you want, but ugly comes to mind.  Said Babcock:  “We got humbled so bad (Saturday) I would say that we better be ready to go. When things go like they did the other night you want to put them behind as fast as you can. We should be a pretty desperate team (Tuesday).’’

By the same token, if you (rightfully) call the Wings humbled, I have no idea what modifier you’d use to describe the BJ’s play (0-7-1). BJ beat-writer Michael Arace, posted this comment a week ago: Time for Jackets to panic? Ask again after three games: After tonight’s game, the Jackets have a nasty little back-to-back this weekend, when they are on the road at Detroit and Ottawa. If they can squeeze two victories out of these three games, then 2-5-1 will not seem all that bad when Wisniewski returns for a home game against Detroit in seven days.  But if they are 1-6-1 or 0-7-1, the pressure to turn things around gets a hydraulic ratcheting.  After those three games, Arace answered his own question today:  “They might just go 0-for-October. Or, maybe they will surprise us. At this point, any victory would be stunning.”

I can’t believe Z only has 2 points through his first 6 games.  Haven’t really noticed him so far this season at all.  Anyone know if he’s injured more than usual?  Flip looks like a man on a mission this season, same with Mule.  Pav is a given, but Z is the only one I barely notice when he’s on the ice.

Clearly also only has 2 points, Pav is on their line and he’s got 5.  I haven’t been a huge fan of this Clearly, Z, Pav line, not as much as I thought.  It’d be nice to see a younger guy up there just to kick the tires, like Abby maybe.  Cleary is a wrecking ball out there but it’s usually himself he’s wrecking.  Pav hasn’t been able to deke and dangle this year like in years past, players are getting hip to it.  Play the body.  Making it hard to open time and space on that line.  Cleary and Abs are the same player except Abdi has a more physical game and a better shot, Cleary is just more responsible.

Hope this is the game where those 2 really make themselves noticeable.

Awesome job as usual OKie.

I personally wasn’t expecting a W Saturday given the circumstances, but good god. Don’t just quit after two periods. And I know logical thinking says it makes no difference, but I still have to wonder: just what the hell was Uncle Mike thinking? Why would you throw your back-up to the proverbial wolves like that? Why not have the back-up start against the 0-for team and have your big-time goaltender potentially steal one for you on a tough night?

As for tonight, what SHOULD happen is a friggin blowout by the guys in white and red. But considering how desperate the Blow J’s are likely to be, I’m thinking a 3-1 final, Mule with two, and a Hank empty netter.

LET’S GO RED WINGS (exclamation point)

BJ’s are the worst team in the league,a win against them should only count for 1 point anyway

OK, but at the same time, what if your backup gives the 0-fer team its first win and your starter gives your team its first loss?

I think if you’re on your send back-to-back set in the season and it’s against an undefeated team, you might as well put your backup in so that your starter doesn’t possibly get lit up in net (also, notice that Babs didn’t put Howard in after 5, 6 or even 7 goals?) on a night when the entire team is likely not to be as sharp.

That way, when it you’re thinking back on it, this game is an easy one to throw away.  “Hey, we were on our second game in a back-to-back and we didn’t even have our starter.”

No need to over analyze one game, even of it is the only thing to do with all the long breaks

Conklin is a good goalie who had a bad night
The team in front of him is pretty damn good
There are 82 regular season games
None of them mean anything once you’re in the playoffs

I wouldn’t say Abdelkader has a better shot than Cleary; not by far.

What I will say is that Abdelkader seems to be one of the Wings’ only players who is consistently willing to shoot at the low part of the net and that this helps create rebounds.

I honestly don’t think Abdelkader can handle the responsibility of playing up with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Part of the reason Zetterberg and Cleary have looked less visible is that for five of the six games they’ve played, they’ve been up against the other team’s top line/top pairing (Washington flipped the script by forcing the 1-v-3 line matchup). Cleary and Zetterberg are driving the puck in the right direction though. That line is on average a +48 Corsi through 6 games.  I would not split them up because the puck hasn’t gone in quite as much as expected just yet.

Detroit (5-1-0) are coming off a 7-1 pasting at DC.

The beat down we got the other nite had better be a wake-up call.

Like the Mick says,“No passengers.” The Caps were taunting the Wings for the last 5 minutes, and, no response.

And, of course, we are facing a desperate Team in the BJs.

Thanks, OAkie. You give the 19 something to look forward to with the most excellent GDT every game.

Don’t worry Kate, I won’t tell Ozzie.

Khan(!) has tonights lines, Emmerton on the pine:

Detroit has scored only two even-strength goals in its last two games combined, a 5-2 win over Columbus and 7-1 loss at Washington. Babcock said turnovers have been a problem. They were charged with 15 giveaways against the Capitals and 11 vs. the Blue Jackets. “We haven’t been as good the last two games,’’ Babcock said. “We got away with one (Friday vs. Columbus). Our power play scored against Columbus (three goals), but we were careless with the puck.  “So two games we haven’t taken care of the puck. You’re not going to win a lot of games like that.’‘

Here is Detroit’s lineup:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Cleary
Hudler-Franzen-Filppula
Abdelkader-Helm-Bertuzzi
Holmstrom-Miller-Eaves

Lidstrom-White
Kronwall-Stuart
