GDT - Game #24:  Red Wings at Sabres (7:30)

The Red Wings (15-7-1) are seeking their first seven-game win streak since March 20-April 1, 2010, and will try to accomplish that against a Sabres team (13-10-1) that’s 1-3-1 in its last five.  Pavel Datsyuk, has a team-best five goals and five assists during Detroit’s six-game win streak.

DET are 5-5 on the road this year (23 in league), and begin a stretch where they will play 14 of their next 19 games are away from JLA.  It looks to be a struggle to keep pace in the ridiculously tight WC standings.  No worries though, as the Wings have been getting non-all-star goalie magic in Jimmy Howard.  Howard has allowed two goals or less in 15 of his 20 starts.  Babcock, in an uncharacteristically straightforward moment had this comment:  “I think we’re getting excellent goaltending right now, as good as we’ve had since I’ve been here, for sure.’‘

Game on, LGRW.

My favorite team vs my wife’s favorite team. I better stop on the way home and pick up a fresh case of ginger ale. This one is going to be fun.

(I benched Pominville on my fantasy team this week solely because of this game. I don’t want to inadvertently root for someone to score against Jimmah)

Heh.  I don’t have that problem.  St. Louis scored against the WIngs the other day and I was yelling at the TV, unhappy.  My wife said “But you have him on your H2H team!” and I replied with “I don’t care!  He has 81 other games he can score in!  Not this one!”.

I’ve never had problem rooting for one of my fantasy players to get shut down by the Wings.  I have Luke Adam on my H2H team as well right now.  I hope he gets loads on SOG and absolutely nothing else, 0’s across the board (OK some PIM might be ok too I guess).

That West is still just…. man.  6 pts. between 1st and 11th.  You don’t think that 6-game skid earlier was important in the grand scheme of things?  The heck it wasn’t….

Tyler Myers may be out, but the Sabres called up someone for his debut tonight.

Apparently Joe Finley will be making his debut on the Sabres blueline, all 6’8”, 260lbs of him.  Sabre fans are giving him the Jonny Ericsson treatment before he’s even played a game.

Thanks, Okie.

as much as I’ve tried to forget it, the debacle in Boofalu two years ago still haunts me ...

but as Babs said (and the some of the player have picked-up on & repeated to the media sound bites),
‘We need to decide what kind of team we want to be.’

no let up tonight, boys, K?

Thanks Okie for a great post.

I get to end up my weekend with the Wings on Sunday night live so I’m getting excited.

Always interesting to get and Eastern Conference match up.  I hope it is an exciting, fast skating game like the Tampa game.

Let’s go Red Wings!

No Red Wings news out of Buffalo as yet, but I did notice this bit from Ted Kulfan:

Chris Conner finally gets an opportunity to be part of his hometown team. The Livonia native was called up by the Red Wings and will be in uniform Friday against Buffalo.
Conner replaces Fabian Brunnstrom. Conner, 27, signed last summer as a free agent, leads Grand Rapids with 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 20 games. The 23 points rank sixth in the AHL in scoring.

I guess, at least in Babcock’s mind, Brunnstrom failed to impress.

Buffalo is badly injured and riding Enroth pretty hard (like a taunton on Hoth at sunset). This is one of those games where if the wings have jump in the beginning, they will capitalize off of the fragility of the team.

Bonus - we get to see what Leino looks like again. Compare him against his former team and then think about his salary. He’s making $6 million this year, which is the same as Zetterberg’s annual cap hit.

The Brunnstrom ping-ponging over the past couple weeks are less about the on-ice performance and more about trying to keep him in Michigan until his wife gives birth.  Kenny said as much last week before the Boston game.  That said, she gave birth this morning.  Khan broke that news and posted the lineups:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Bertuzzi
Filppula-Zetterberg-Hudler
Cleary-Helm-Conner
Miller-Abdelkader-Holmstrom
Emmerton (scratched)

Lidstrom-White
Kronwall-Ericsson
Kindl-Stuart
Commodore (scratched)

Kind of excited to see Conner play.  I was a student at MTU when he was there and saw him play quite a bit.

On a slightly related note, this was one of the best hockey games I ever saw, definatly the most memorable:

For what it’s worth, and it is at least a little, the Wings have only 3 “minus” players.
Smith -1
Brunnstrom -2
Cleary -2

Pavel has jump started into positive territory.  This is consistent with Detroit ranking #3 in 5:5, with 1.50:1.00 GF:GA.

Awesome GDT, Jeff.  Thanks.

Babcock, in an uncharacteristically straightforward moment had this comment:  “I think we’re getting excellent goaltending right now, as good as we’ve had since I’ve been here, for sure.’‘

The Buffalo Sabres were expecting big production from former Detroit Red Wings forward Ville Leino, after signing him to a six-year, $27 million free-agent contract in July.

But the season has been a colossal struggle for Leino, who has just two goals and four assists, along with a minus-4 rating, in 24 games heading into tonight’s contest against the Red Wings.

Bwah - hah - hah.  As PT Barnum used to say _________ .

Technically speaking, we’ve only played three trap games this season. TB and 2 vs. Minnesota. Or have we played them 3 times?
