GDT - Game #19:  Red Wings at Ducks (8:00)

Coach Babcock, post LAK game:  “The story of our year is we played a lot of good hockey and we’ve found ways to make enough mistakes that we haven’t been able to win enough.  And yet you can’t continually get 38 shots a game and give up 22 or 24 and not win. Eventually it’s going to happen for you.  “It’s not like we haven’t worked. But the results aren’t coming. We can all get down or yell and scream or get mad at each other, To me that’s a waste of time. We talked about it yesterday, be resilient and keep coming. It’s kind of our motto, just keep coming.’’

And that they did yesterday against a solid LAK club. After surrendering a short-handed goal against, DET answered and on that same PP.  The Wings shut-out the Kings the rest of the game; outshooting them 38-24, scored twice on the PP, and (obviously) killed 5 penalties. Howard stoned Kopitar’s penalty shot.  DET were strong on the boards, strong cycling the puck, and won their share of 50-50 puck battles; a very solid road effort.

If the Wings have any gas left in the tank, they should do well today at ANA.  The Ducks, 1-6-3 in their last 10, are playing fowl hockey (sorry, couldn’t resist); their 2.00 G/G is dead last, they get roasted at even strength - their 0.68 5-5 F/A is 28, they are outshot by 5 per game, and have the third worst FO%.

Counting the ANA game, DET (10-7-1, 10th in WC) have 2 games remaining prior to Thanksgiving (US).  8th spot in the WC is currently held by EDM with 22 points. Today’s magic number is 19, and DET have 21 pts.  DET finish this stretch Tuesday at JLA against CGY (13 in WC, 17 pts).

Khan(!) has a few post games notes, including this gem from Datsyuk:

[Asked] Why hasn’t he been smiling lately?
“Maybe I don’t drink that much,’’ Datsyuk said.

Babcock said he hadn’t decided if Howard will make his 12th consecutive start in goal tonight in Anaheim or if Ty Conklin will make his first start since Oct. 26.

...a very solid road effort.

Indeed.

I DVR’d the game yesterday and just finished watching it.  I loved the Wings in this game!  Sixty minutes of hard work and grit.  No let up at all.  And Jimmah.  Oh my goodness.

Wondering who will be in goal today.  Normally, it would be the back up, right?

As bad as the Ducks are playing, this is exactly the kind of game the Wings too often lose - the ones they “should” win.  So I hope they come out with the same determination they showed yesterday.

Okay, I’ll be the first to bite:

It was the motto of the zoo monkeys first.

Sterling work as always, Okie.  Serve up the orange sauce early, Wings, and don’t let up until the duck is well and truly done.

We naturally assumed you were a free-range monkey.  It’s kinda hard to tell over the interwebs though.  Morel high ground—they got a bunch of those up in the U.P. I think.

Good win yesterday.  Let’s hope Pavel doubles his goal total for the season again today.

The year Fedorov went to Anaheim I saw the game out there in March at a 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon start (Specific Time, not Eastern).  Detroit scored 2 quickly with Sergei on the ice and then a third in the first period for a 3-0 lead.

Quickly the game degenerated with $7M in goal in Curtis Joseph and others, and before I knew it the Ducks were ahead 6-4, and finally won the game 8-6, I believe.

It was brutal, and also followed a game in LA the night before, from which I was terribly hoarse, but not too hoarse to yell out “Hey Fedorov, that’s 2!” when the Wings went up 2-0.  Good tip, shut up with wisecracks early in the game when on the road.

Sergei lead the Ducks from the SCF straight to the golf course, but on that Sunday afternoon it was indeed a trap game.

Don’t ask me how we pulled that one out, either, I just don’t know. ASU is a potent team offensively and the UA’s defense can’t stop a rock from rolling uphill. We REALLY need a new defensive coordinator. What’s that ole’ Sandusky guy up to these days?

...Oh. Oh he did? Really? In the…wow, really? And he said he just wanted to have ‘em around to, what? Seriously?

Replay of Hawks Oil is on NHL-N right now.

For all the offensive talent of Chi, they sure don’t seem to be able to handle a team that moves on them with speed. They’re all great snipers, sure, but rush at them with speed and they look like an AHL squad.

Do not. Fear. The Hawks.

Was kinda fun watching them unravel last night.  The one reasaon for continued optimism is that every team in the league so far seems to have flaws that can be exploited.

It calls to mind my wife’s theory about men.  “They’re all compensating for something”.  I’m still not sure what she means by that, but it seems to work in this case.

Love the “DuhUcks” thing, Rumbear.  Gotta win tonight.  I hate the DuhUcks and love it when we beat them.  Even if they are mere shadows of their former fowl selves.

Anyone know who is starting in goal?  I wouldn’t be surprised to see Conks tonight.
