Veterans Day GDT - Game #14:  Red Wings host Oilers (7:30)

DET (7-5-1) are playing game 5 of their 6 game homestand (2-1-1).  The Wings look to extend their modest winning streak to three games, which has seen them outscore the opposition 10-2.  Winning tonight will be no easy task against the Northwest leading Oil (9-4-2).  The Oil do not score (2.33, 23), do not shoot the puck (25.5, 28), and can’t win a draw (47.3, 26); but their #1 goalie hasn’t lost a game in regulation.  Nikolai Khabibulin is 7-0-2,  and posts an obscene 0.98 GAA, and a ridiculous 0.964 save%.  The Oil lost last night at BOS, 6-3.  Unfortunately for DET,  Devan Dubnyk was the Oil backstop last night, and Khabibulin is expected in net tonight.

We all know how the Master Chief will be spending this Veteran’s Day, watching Sparty play basketball from the flight deck of his ship.  The USS Carl Vinson will host 7500 sailors, veterans, and wounded warriors for the game.  That is outstanding work by the Navy, just outstanding.  May God bless all our Veterans, and LGRW.

Hope Chief enjoys the game.  And hopefully the weather has cooperated to where they can play it on the deck like originally planned.  As a Spartan fan I obviously have a rooting interest, but as “gimmick” games go this one is truly awesome.  Thanks for everything, Chief.

Truthfully, I expect EDM to be a nice benchmark as to which DET team this is now.  EDM will make them work for everything.  If DET doesn’t come prepared to work they won’t have much of a shot to win.

Thank God for no Bert.

From Khan’s story:

“I think Eaves is in. I’ve got Eaves and Brunner both ready to go,’’ Babcock said. “I think (Zetterberg) is in, but I’m not 100 percent sure. It’s not an upper body, it’s not a lower body, it’s a middle body. I don’t know if it’s anything. He started to skate and didn’t finish the skate.’‘

Sounds like the back is acting up again to me.  Not good with back-2-back games tonight and tomorrow against 2 really good teams.

I’d rest Z for tomorrow, Dallas is a much bigger and better team than Edmonton. Edmonton’s strength is clearly in their goalie, but Dallas is a much more well rounded team and represents more of a conference final opponent (and a tougher one at that) than does EDM. So take the night off and bring him in fresh for tomorrow.

And Datsyuk, still a defensive wizard, is finding his game but I believe he’ll shine tonight against these youngsters.

I’m picking Pav and Brunnstrom for the biggest standouts in our game tonight.
