GDT - Game #10:  Red Wings host Wild (7:30)

Your Detroyet Red Wings (5-4-0 - 12th in WC) have dropped four straight, and that is bad.  Worse still, in those four games, they have been outscored 16-4. Excluding an empty-net goal in their last win, 5-2 against Columbus on Oct. 21, they have only three even-strength goals in five games. There is Panic in Detroit(!)

The Wings are averaging a league best 35.7 shots per game, but four players (Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Ian White and Nicklas Lidstrom) have accounted for 35 percent of their shots (111-of-321).  The second line has vanished, Hudler has gone four games without a shot and has only one shot in five games; Franzen had one shot in four games before recording four in Saturday’s loss at Minnesota.

Don’t expect DET’s offense to do much tonight.  With Harding in net for MIN, the Wild has earned three of a possible four points vs. DET this season. He is 1-0-1 with a 1.45 goals-against average and a .961 save percentage in those games.

There is at least one happy Red Wing in the DET clubhouse, Kronwall signed a seven-year, $33.25 million contract extension.

Tonight is the start of a six-game homestand, Game on, bitches(!)

Babcock also shuffled lines a bit in practice and altered the top power-play unit, replacing defenseman Ian White with forward Johan Franzen and using Henrik Zetterberg in a quasi-point position.

I’m looking forward to Nyquist playing tonight.  Put him in Bert or Cleary’s spot and see what he can do. L.G.R.W.

Exactly what I had in mind in my last mega-rant.  Given that the trade market probably isn’t too favorable right now and the team is goal-starved, might as well take a chance and see if the kid can bring anything to the table right now.  I know it’s outside the box from the normal Red Wing M.O., but I think it’s worth a try.  If he’s not ready, he can go back to GR without having to clear waivers.  On the other hand, he just might be one of those exceptionally skilled, unusually mature guys who can jump right in and make a difference.

Nobody who saw him play in the pre-season can deny that his offensive skill set and instinct for the game looked pretty damn impressive for a first year pro.

*sigh*  I’ll be honest.  I’m almost hoping this tailspin continues so that Babcock can’t hide his prejudices and mistakes any more and has to finally answer for them.  His way and ideas of how icetime is earned certainly are out of whack from reality, and maybe it’s time for Kenny to make a couple of moves specifically to shake Babcock up with some of “his” players and remind him that he has to answer to someone.

About time Uncle Mike put Homer back with Dangle. I love Homer, but at this stage in his career he’s pretty much a liability on the ice, unless he’s paired with Dangle. Why our Uncle thought Homer could just play on the 4th line and be a PP specialist, i don’t know. Those second and third lines though, they’re… interesting. Two snipers and a net-front presence on the second line, and a playmaker, grinder and net-front guy on the third. That third line especially just looks so awkward, so hell, they’ll probably be the ones to get us… er the Wings… actually no, us, off our goal-scoring schnide. Can’t wait to see nyquist in action, he and the Mule seemed to have some chemistry in the pre-season, hopefully it continues tonight. I still remember that absolute beauty of snipe shot to the top left corner against the Pens in the pre-season finale, it was a great give-and-go between Nyquist and Franzen. hope to see much more of that tonight.

One last thing, if the fuching Unabomber takes another god damn penalty with under five minutes left in the third, it should be an automatic pressbox visit for Thursday. I personally don’t think Happy should be in the Leino Lounge tonight, so Bertuzzi and Buckets better have their best games of the season.

Congratulations Okie! And awesome work with the GDT as always.

Okie, congratulations!  And thanks for taking the time to do this for us today!

Can’t wait to see Nyquist in there.  And there’s no way I can prove this, but the lines for tonight are exactly what I predicted they would be when I was thinking about it this morning.  I wanted Homer back with Dangle and Z and I wanted Miller/Helm/Eaves reunited.  I figured Uncle Mike would put Nyquist with Mule, with Bert in there as a protector of sorts.  That created the Cleary/Flip/Abby line pretty much ‘cuz they had to go somewhere.

I’m glad Hudler is sitting.  No shots in four games?!?  Unbelievable.

I’ve read that Nyquist is really excited for tonight.  I just hope the fans will not be too hard on him.  It seems like the expectations are very high, and he is very, very talented, but he’s a kid out of college playing his first NHL game, and we can’t expect him to be the Savior.

But it gives us something to be excited about, right?

Leino Lounge

now,that is funny

and I need funny after these garbage games,
same old story since the Talbot Monster’s two goals: Babcock is almost stiff in the head and no fuching heart in this team, its not just that game 7,its the start in Sweden: an embarassement to a big part of the team in their homeland against a nonplayoff bunch of asses,
HOF game for The Captain in Toronto, another embarassing loss against The Laughs even, and TPH’s 1500th game in probably his last season; another *#$%@& embarassing showing of losership when it actually matters,
those kinds of games mean something more, and if a team cant get up and win them for their teammates and themselves,we can never expect a cup again

I love Homer, but at this stage in his career he’s pretty much a liability on the ice, unless he’s paired with Dangle.

Go back and watch the last game.  Homer was one of the few busting his ass every time he was out on the ice.  The guy plays with heart.  No way does Detroit win the Cups without Homer in the line-up.  He hasn’t lost a step because he’s never had a step to lose.  He plays a role that no one else on the Wings does as well as he does.  He doesn’t complain he just goes out and does his job.  Besides, this is probably his last year, he’s earned his way and the Wings will be a lesser team without him.

Too bad he can’t speak English, he’d be a great guy to light a fire under some asses in the locker room. His play on the ice should be a motivator to the physically talented ones on the bench too…without balls out effort Homer would be nothing more than a target to shoot pucks at.

Cal, I’m not disputing Homer’s impact on the recent Cups. I’m just saying, I really don’t think he makes an effective 4th liner. I know he busts his ass, but he just doesn’t have the speed to keep up with guys like Miller, Eaves and TazGod. He’s more suited IMO to being what he’s been for the past five plus years, and that’s Dangle’s right hand man. Homer’s always been at his best with Dangle, because he seems to know what Dangle needs of him on any given play, and Dangle’s so good with his hands that Homer doesn’t need that extra gear to play with him. On the top line is where he belongs IMO.
