I don’t know who Jeff Seidel is, but a really quick glance at the Free Press archives shows me he’s never written a thing about the Red Wings.
There was a time when future Hall of Famers tripped over themselves to play in Hockeytown. Players like Suter and Parise sprinted to Detroit.
But now, it’s just bad news after bad news.
First, the Red Wings lost in the first round of the playoffs. Then, Nicklas Lidstrom retired. Then Brad Stuart left, followed by Jiri Hudler.
Genius. Lidstrom’s retirement, Stuart’s departure and Hudler’s (second) departure had nothing to do with Detroit’s ability to lure free agents and everything to do with (a) family, (b) family and (c) idiocy and greed.
As for Parise and Suter, are we to assume that because they chose Minnesota over us, and Pittsburgh, Chicago, New York, their previous teams…that none of them are able to lure free agents anymore either? Or did their decision have more to do with (a) and (b) above?
After Parise, what are the two forwards who will be most sought after in this class of UFAs? Semin and Doan. We already know Semin is chomping at the bit to play with Datsyuk. Money will be an issue, not Detroit’s attraction to UFAs. As for Doan, well Jeff did you see this from Khan(!!!)?
Shane Doan, Phoenix – The power forward’s agent has called the Red Wings several times the past couple of days, seeking an offer, and with Parise off the market, Detroit will make a pitch for Doan. However, Doan has stated he won’t decide until Monday if he will leave Phoenix, where he has played since 1996. His main concern is whether the team will relocate in 2013-14 due to the unstable ownership situation. Ultimately, many expect he will stay in Phoenix.
Oh, and who’s on Rick Nash’s short list, Jeff? Have you looked into that? How about Bobby Ryan? If he has a list at all you’d better believe the Wings are there too.
Talk to me on 1 August. If the Wings haven’t accomplished anything, we can revisit this stupid angle…and the guy who picked this, of all times, to pile on the Wings.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
