Breaking News: Hometown Announcers Are Biased

Oddly, Ryan Lambert (AKA “Two Line Pass”) has found yet another way to work his tearful Wing hate into a post over at the search engine.

He’s used “polls” and “research” and in depth questioning of anyone who’s publicly agreed with him in the past to come up with this opus: announcers are biased and, get this, so are fans.  Case in point, because it’s Lambert, the Detroit Red Wings.

While watching a Detroit Red Wings broadcast earlier this week, it occurred to be that homerism might just be a reflection of the broadcasts of their favorite team’s games. Just as a fer-instance, Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond are, shall we say, excessive in their praise of Detroit every night.

The way they see it, Pavel Datsyuk(notes) should not only win the Hart, Selke, Art Ross, Rocket Richard and Lady Byng every year, but he should at least be runner up for the Vezina and in the conversation for Jack Adams. Every play he makes is brilliant and every mistake exonerated (not that there are too many of the latter to explain away.

Aside from the Vezina and Adams references, which I’m assuming (but not guaranteeing) were tongue in cheek…I’ll agree with every single other award in there.  Does that make me a “homer”.  No, I established that years ago.  What it makes me is really frigging smart.  Datsyuk is the best in the business and that’s a fact.

And as for the Redmond/Daniels tendency toward “homerism”?  You might want to ask around, little bitter Ryan.  Mick and Ken are widely considered two of the best in the business.  Do they cater to their audience? Yep.  Which announcing pair doesn’t?

Shocking this manifesto comes out just days after yet another Detroit victory over Calgary (from his post, “according to an unscientific poll conducted on Twitter at 10:30 at night on a Wednesday”, in other words immediately after his garbage team lost another lead and another game, to the Wings, again).  Maybe if little Ryan had listened to the whole game, he would have heard Mick ripping the officials for at least two calls against the Flames.  Whatever suits your agenda, eh Ryan?

And the wheels of bias keep turning at the “neutral” Puck Daddy.  Keep it coming, Lambert.  Every time you try your best to scorch the Wings, that ripe old Canadien (an) insecurity pops right out.  Fun for the whole family.

That douchenozzle failed to mention the WBC cruiserweight title that Pavel captured Oct. 8 in Detroit.

And this has been confirmed by independent, graduate-level studies, and papers published in peer-reviewed papers I suppose?

At least learn how to use the word “fact”, bud.

I was going to point that out.  On more than one occasion I have heard Mick say something to the tune of, “I don’t like that call.  They’ll take it, but it’s a bad call.”  I don’t think it was actually the game in Calgary I heard it on, well, frankly because I was too drunk to remember that, but I believe it was the Preds game.

On that note…what broadcasters are not biased?  What about, Ed Olc…ugh, I can’t even type his name without vomiting in my mouth.  Of the foreign feeds I have been forced to watch this year I can specifically remember the Ducks and Hawks fluffers being extremely biased.

Finally, who gives a shit?  Of course their fuching biased.

Eh, that article wasn’t an attack on Detroit announcers, it was a poor attempt at sports psychology in general. Apparently the author is easily influenced by the people on his television and he assumes that the rest of us are too.

Not a lame attack, just a lame premise.

Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey are worse than the Wings announcers. Even as a Pens fan it’s becoming unbearable to listen to them make excuses for the Pens struggles.

While you are waiting….
Boston at Washington 7:00 EST tonight.
The first of B2B for the Bruins that face St Louis tomorrow (in BOS).
The Bruins have not lost on the road yet this season, their 2 losses being at home.
Tomorrow night should be great, T Thomas has 3 SO, as does Halak.

In other news, while taking a shower earlier this week, it occurred to Ryan Lambert that water might just be wet.

Is that the first local broadcast that Ryan Lambert has watched of any sport ever?  This clearly must be the case if this is just now dawning on him.  Does he realize that most local broadcasters are employees of the team they broadcast for?

Bing-bango, Lambert.

The only point Lambert seems to be trying to make is to state that the Red Wings’ announcers are guilty of homerism.  OMG, I’m… shocked that this should be happening on our airwaves!  Like many of you, I’ve listened to a lot of announcers from a lot of cities, and it’s hardly a secret that almost all of them have some aspect of homerism in their work.  The homerism varies in its form and intensity, but it’s usually not too hard to find.  So if that’s his point, it’s a ridiculously obvious one.  If, on the other hand, he thinks that homerism is a rare thing, then he really hasn’t been paying attention. Or more likely, he was simply so eager to do some bashing that he allowed his emotions to subvert his critical thinking.  Either way, it isn’t a viewpoint that has any place at the grown-ups table.

You can’t even call Ryan Lambert a hemorrhoid because he’s actually a perfect a-hole.

When I think of homerism I think of this gem from the 2009 Quarterfinals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj3MDqShlGA

The announcers are too preoccupied with the antics of their player to noticed that the wings have scored.

The wings announcers are biased; they’re happy when the wings win, score and make a big play but they’re far from the painful, prototypical homers that overhype mediocre players and whine about every call that goes against their team.  Anyone that watches the wings broadcasts knows that Mick complains about every hook and hold called against both teams.  If you can’t stomach the hype Datsyuk gets when he makes a play that no other player in the world would even attempt or don’t like it when the wings announcers point out that The Perfect Human is indeed perfect, turn off the sound and have have your computer read the espn play by play.

Tough call.  Washington is a conference rival, but St. Louis is a better team with better goaltending.  If they were going to give Timmy a day off, it’s a toss up as to which one to pick.

It’s not just the “announcers are biased” concept that sounds typically Lambert-level stupid—it’s his plea to fans to stop being homers, praising their players and to please, please act more objective, because they’re supposedly doing themselves a disservice by following their teams and favorite player with any sort of passion and/or bias that really made me angry.

Only Lambert could suggest that fans need to stop acting like fans and start acting like unbiased journalists (like himself, of course) who get into games for free while, you know, doing things like paying for tickets, buying merchandise, getting player autographs, etc.  Apparently we’re all morons for daring to harbor any biases whatsoever toward the teams we cheer for, at least in Lambert’s eyes…

And that hammers home the truth about Lambert—he and Adrian Dater are both so detached from reality that they can open their mouths and suggest that fans need to get over themselves and stop acting like wins are better than a “good story” that sells newspapers or generates web page hits.

THAT’s biased thinking, and it’s, “Why can’t everyone just agree with me because I’m smarter than everyone else?” stupid.

In the end, the worst part is that Lambert wins every time he does this because he knows he’s gonna get a rise out of a very passionate Red Wings fan base precisely because we care so damn much about our team.  He’s investing in his job security and Puck Daddy’s bottom line by provoking the Big Red Machine’s fan base every week.
