Chris Osgood dove. I’ll say it up front, and the replays confirmed it seconds after it happened. Sykora skimmed him and he took a seat.
But that won’t be the last memory Wing fans have of him, nor will it define an amazing postseason run.
Benched for Game 1, then the only impact he has is a punch to the head of a guy he knows is fresh off a concussion (allegedly). Oh, I know. I know that if Franzen’s out there, he’s “fair game.” But, know this too. Roberts knew what he was doing, who he was punching and what caused it. Roberts, by all accounts an honorable guy and a true hockey player, showed a gutless side last night.
And I’m not the only one saying it.
...reputations are being lost as well. Unless they want to be remembered for nothing more accomplished than Gary Roberts’ awful, chicken-scat cheap shot left hook to the temple of concussion-recovering Johan Franzen…
A Detroit columnist? Nope. Message board material? Nah, we don’t use hyphens correctly.
Gene Collier from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
42 and on his last legs as a hockey player, an icon to Pens fans and I’m guessing a hero to the young Pens. Yep. Agreed.
Also a coward who waited until Franzen’s back was turned then landed a punch to his temple when he wasn’t looking. Spur of the moment? In most other situations in life yeah. In hockey, an eternity. How long did he have to consider that? Two, three seconds? A week to you and me.
What would Gary Roberts do? Before or after Pavel Datsyuk leveled him? Oh, before? Here’s your answer.
Six strides, for those of you counting at home.
Hopefully, the Wings learned something—a lot—from the first and third rounds. Pittsburgh hasn’t lost in Mellon arena for three months, literally. So winning two there would be a tall order. But it sure would be fun to watch.
WSGRD? That’s the question now. What should he do?
I don’t know. Does he have a golf course on speed dial?

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
