Wayne Fleming’s Fighting Spirit

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Eleven years after taking part in Canada's Olympic gold medal-winning celebration in Salt Lake City, Wayne Fleming lies in his southwest Calgary home clinging to life.

But he's far from battling alone.

Considered the glue that brought Canada's four-man coaching staff together for Canada's first hockey gold in 50 years, Fleming is buoyed by support from a hockey community that continues to surround the long-time coach almost two years after brain surgery.

The power of that support was evident earlier this month when more than a dozen members of his immediate and hockey family gathered at his house for an emotional ceremony inducting him into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. The private commemoration was held eight months before the annual induction is scheduled to be held in Winnipeg.

Under palliative care and confined to his bed since June, the 62-year-old Snowflake, Man., native was largely unresponsive during the gathering until heartfelt words from a Hall official prompted Fleming's eyes to open.

News Not Good On Ohlund And Fleming

from Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,

Lightning coach Guy Boucher gave the grimmest assessment yet about D Mattias Ohlund, who has not played a regular-season game because of two bum knees Boucher said “are worn down.”

Boucher on Thursday even hinted Ohlund might not play this season….

“It just hurts him a lot more than what he would have expected or the doctors would have expected,” Boucher said.

“It’s not about damage. It’s just something that’s difficult to manage because you can’t do much more than what’s been done. It’s pain tolerance now. It’s a question of mobility. It’s a question of can he skate at the level in the NHL he needs to follow.”

FLEMING UPDATE: Assistant coach Wayne Fleming, battling brain cancer, has been moved from his Calgary home to a hospital, said GM Steve Yzerman, who added Fleming has stopped texting and emailing his observations during games.

Wayne Fleming Continues The Fight

from Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,

Lightning assistant coach Wayne Fleming likely will not be with the team this season, GM Steve Yzerman said Saturday.

Fleming, 61, has brain cancer. Though those who have seen him and spoken to him say his mind is sharp — he sends text messages and e-mails to Yzerman and the coaching staff with suggestions and observations during games — he uses a wheelchair and is having another round of chemotherapy and radiation. In Calgary with wife Carolyn, Fleming has had one weeklong treatment every month since April’s surgery.

“He’s determined to beat this disease,” Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said. “He loves watching Tampa Bay games. He lives for his family and hockey and the Lightning.”

Fleming Continues To Rehab

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Former Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Wayne Fleming just received good news from an MRI and continues to rehab in Calgary.

Five months after undergoing extensive brain surgery to remove portions of a tumour, the affable Winnipeg native says he’s grateful for all the encouragement he’s received.

“Every day is a challenge, but I’m focused on staying strong and positive, working hard at rehab and moving forward one day at a time,” wrote Fleming in a text.

“Thanks to the love, support and encouragement of my family, friends and the hockey community, I’m pushing through this. Also, the Tampa Bay Lightning have been so supportive throughout this ordeal, and I’m honoured to work with such a great organization.”

Hockey Canada boss Bob Nicholson watched a recent Lightning game on TV at Fleming’s house during which the former Bolts assistant texted his thoughts to a coaching staff he remains in regular contact with.

Fleming on Tampa’s Mind

From Brian Compton at NHL.com:

While the Lightning spent Tuesday morning preparing for Game 3 at the St. Pete Times Forum, assistant coach Wayne Fleming was undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. Fleming, 60, was diagnosed with the malignant tumor last month. He also had surgery on April 7, a strong indication of just how serious his condition is.

Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher admitted to reporters that Fleming was mentioned during Tuesday morning’s meeting—the club did not take the ice—and how secondary this game becomes when something as potentially devastating as what’s happened to Fleming becomes reality.

“We did bring it up, but it wasn’t to draw for inspiration,” Boucher said. “I think we brought it up to make sure the players are aware what’s going on. It’s not something we want to hide. It’s obviously a very, very serious operation. To be honest with you, I can’t wait to see how it went. It’s a very tough day for him (and) for his family and for our team. We care about the man. Hockey’s way behind all that.”

Wayne Fleming Discusses Cherepanov’s Death

from Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,

Imagine watching one of your players dying. New Lightning assistant coach Wayne Fleming always will have that memory.

As coach of Avangard Omsk in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, Fleming saw one of his most gifted players, forward Aleksei Cherepanov, collapse into the arms of teammate Jaromir Jagr on the bench near the end of an Oct. 13, 2008, game against Vityav Chekov.

Team doctors tried on the bench and in the dressing room to revive Cherepanov, 19, who died that night at a local hospital of an apparent heart attack….

Is there anything you take from what happened?

From a team perspective, it was like taking a crystal vase and dropping it on the concrete floor and trying to pick up the shattered pieces. It was devastating. But it was the individual, too, that passed away. The thing that really hurts is not only do we lose a great player, we’re missing just a fantastic young man. He had a great smile on his face. He was the golden boy of the KHL.

Wayne Fleming Fired by KHL Team… Again

Back on January 9th, we cited a report indicating that the former Flames assistant coach was fired by Avangard Omsk of the KHL, mid-game.  The following day, Darren Dreger of TSN noted a “power struggle” seemed to be going on, with Fleming acknowleding that “I guess they didn’t fire me.”

Well, for anyone keeping up with the trials and tribulations of Wayne Fleming, today brings this news from Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail:

Wayne Fleming, the Canadian-born coach of the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League’s struggling Avangard Omsk team, is out again as coach – this time for good, it would appear.

Russian hockey sources confirmed Friday Fleming was relieved of his coaching duties earlier this week…

Belarus Calls on Calgary Asst Coach Fleming

A translated report at an online Russian news site:

Wayne Fleming, a Canadian coach offered the job of head coach of Belarus’ flagship ice hockey team Dinamo Minsk, held a news conference in Minsk on Monday.

The coach said that he would make up his mind on the offer on June 4, describing his talks with the club and the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation as fairly constructive.

The 57-year-old Fleming, an assistant coach with the NHL’s Calgary Flames, said that he liked Minsk and expressed certainty that his family would find it comfortable to live in the city. [...]

He is the second Canadian coach to be offered the Dinamo Minsk job. John Paddock turned down the offer earlier this year.
