Vernon Fidler Retiring

from Vernon Fidler at The Player's Tribune,
I'm retiring today.
I know, I know. I really thought I was going to play longer than Jagr, too. But here we are are.
I’m going to get to how an undrafted kid from Alberta played almost 900 games in the NHL — and also how Joffrey Lupul is terrible at impressions — but first I want to tell you about a really bad day in the Fiddler household.
It was August 9, 1988. I was eight years old and enjoying the summer in Edmonton. I had just come home to eat some lunch after running around with my friends all morning. Like usual in our house, the radio was on. And that was when I heard it. Wayne Gretzky was getting traded to L.A.
You have to understand — to a kid growing up in Edmonton in the ’80’s, Wayne wasn’t just a hockey player, he wasn’t even a god … he was bigger than that. He was Wayne.

Nashville, TN - Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Saturday that the club has acquired forward Vernon Fiddler from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2017 Entry Draft.
Fiddler, 36 (5/9/80), has appeared in 857 NHL games over parts of 14 seasons with Nashville, Phoenix (Arizona), Dallas and New Jersey. He has recorded 260 points (103g-157a) in his career, including three points (1g-2a) in 39 games with the Devils this season. The Edmonton, Alberta, native earned an assist on a third-period goal on Dec. 3, 2016, against the Predators at Bridgestone Arena.
Originally signed by Nashville in 2002 as an undrafted free agent, Fiddler spent six seasons with the Predators from 2002-09, totaling 93 points (45g-48a) in 305 games. He earned a career-high 32 points (11g-21a) with the Preds in 2007-08.

Vernon Fiddler Had Better Offers But Returns To Dallas
by Paul on 07/03/14 at 07:59 AM ET

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Vernon Fiddler took less money Wednesday to come back to the Dallas Stars, and that’s what the “culture” of Jim Nill’s makeover can create.
“Honestly, I had better offers. But I wanted to stay with this team and finish the job,” Fiddler said after signing a two-year deal that will pay him $1 million next season and $1.5 million in 2015-16. “There is a real attraction to playing here and playing to win, and seeing this through. I think this is going to be a really good team, and I want to be a part of that.”
Fiddler completes the off-season for Nill. The general manager said he is done with acquisitions after trading for center Jason Spezza and signing winger Ales Hemsky, goalie Anders Lindback and forwards Patrick Eaves and Fiddler as free agents. The Stars have a full roster, with the only thing to be determined is how many kids from the AHL-champion Texas Stars earn a spot on the team in training camp.

John Erskine: Pugilist, Sniper, Mustachioed Warrior

Forget Darryl Sittler’s 10-point performance of 30 some-odd years ago…
I believe it is entirely possible that Washington’s John Erskine may have had the greatest hockey game in the history of the planet last night.
No, his stat line won’t wow you but this game-winner against Atlanta was just icing on top of a cake that already included layers of an epic scrap with Eric Boulton and the all kinds of awesomeness that is the Erskine ‘stache.
Take in the fight, please:
