Niederreiter and Strome Highlight Hockey Future’s NYI Prospect List
by William Morrison on 09/07/11 at 03:53 PM ET

Yesterday, Hockey’s Future named Nino Niederreiter and Ryan Strome to the top of the NY Islanders prospect list. Nino and Strome are very talented forward prospects and, barring some unforeseen circumstance, will be bright spots among the other young, talented forwards on the Islanders for many, many years to come. As stated many times on this blog, I fully expect Nino to make the team out of training camp. I expect Strome to be with the Islanders full-time at the start of the 2012-2013 season.

Lightning Land Roloson from Islanders
by Jon Jordan on 01/02/11 at 01:53 AM ET

As NYI Point Blank‘s Chris Botta first reported, the Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired goaltender Dwayne Roloson from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenseman Ty Wishart.
The Tampa Tribune‘s Erik Erlendsson and others have since confirmed.
Roloson joins Dan Ellis, the injured Mike Smith and upstart rookie Cedrick Desjardins (1st star in tonight’s win over the Rangers and 2-0-0 with two goals against in two starts) in Tampa’s goaltending ranks.
Four’s a crowd.
[UPDATE: According to ESPN 1040’s Mike Corcoran, Desjardins will be returned to AHL Norfolk.]

News from the Farm: 10/21/10

If you’re looking for an update on Aunt Bessie’s cow, or information on last summer’s harvest, look on.
If, however, you’re looking for news and information on the top minor league affiliates of the NHL’s Southeast Division clubs, you’re in the right place.
In years past, I would run News from Norfolk as a regular feature on Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate and now, News from the Farm will feature the Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, Hershey Bears and Rochester Americans along with the Admirals, to follow the progress of the Southeast’s future stars at the AHL level (and, at least for now, Michael Nylander and Sheldon Souray too).
We’ll look at game results, standings, league and team-leading scorers and goaltenders, pick a player of the week, have a glance at the schedule ahead and keep you abreast of any other developments for these players and their clubs.
Thursday seemed as good a day as any for this weekly feature, so that’s where it will be slotted in to start (and this week, as the first installment, there’s plenty of AHL action to catch up on).
Without further delay, News from the Farm:

Turnaround in Tampa Starts at the Top

Before a single tweak to the roster, the Tampa Bay Lightning were already poised for improvement in 2010-11. With the tumultuous era of previous ownership already behind them when the sale of the team to Jeff Vinik was completed late last season, gone in an instant were any and all off-ice concerns and the circus went back to being an annual visitor to the St. Pete Times Forum rather than a permanent resident. With the appointment of Steve Yzerman as general manager, credibility returned to the franchise and new head coach Guy Boucher was widely regarded as the hottest commodity on the off-season coaching market.
Without a solitary player move, hockey life in Tampa was good again.
But far be it from Yzerman to rest on the comfort that fans surely feel by him simply not being one of those other guys. The addition of former Flyers forward Simon Gagne headlines a list of shrewd off-season maneuvers for the rookie GM and the revamped roster could very well translate to the sort of on-ice success that will make Lightning followers quickly forgot about three non-playoff seasons gone by.

Cooper’s Track Record, Balanced Approach Bodes Well for AHL Admirals
by Jon Jordan on 08/11/10 at 05:29 PM ET

In a summer that has been, at the very least, stabilizing (if not downright successful) for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the vast majority of those taking notice of the work done throughout the organization have come away impressed – including the club’s latest addition, Jon Cooper, announced yesterday as head coach of the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals.
“The whole thing that drew me to (the club),” Cooper said, “Was the (positive) attitude and the people they’ve brought in.”
Now, included in that very group, Cooper is well aware of some fortunate timing for the two sides to come together.
“I wanted to go the AHL at some point,” explained Cooper, who leaves his post as head coach and general manager of the United States Hockey League’s Green Bay Gamblers. “I just probably didn’t think it was going to be right this second.”
But now that making that jump is indeed a reality for Cooper, his excitement and enthusiasm cannot be tempered and he gives his new bosses credit for finding him in their search.
