Ann Arbor To Detroit: A Look At Outdoor Hockey

I have spent most of my day driving around Lower Michigan. Made my way to Ann Arbor this morning where in just a few more days the Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2014 NHL Winter Classic.

Took a few shots from around Michigan Stadium (The Big House) while I was there.

Marlies Coach Calls Out Cherry

from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

The battle between Don Cherry and the Maple Leafs organization escalated Wednesday.

Marlies coach Dallas Eakins — whom Cherry chided for calling out Nazem Kadri’s eating habits — fired back at the host of CBC Coach’s Corner, first by saying he’s a big fan of Cherry.

But Eakins added he’d never seen Cherry at a Marlies game or practice. Then he took a shot at Cherry’s Twitter account, from which Cherry had lambasted the Leafs on their handling of Kadri.

“He’s a strong-willed guy; I’m sure he believes in everything that he had somebody type for him,” Eakins told TSN Radio at Marlies training camp.

“I invite Don to come on down, You’re more than welcome at any time. You’ve got a lot of fans here. We’d be honoured to have him,” Cherry “I’ve never ever seen him at one of our games and I’ve never ever seen him at a practice and he’s never come in and knocked on my door.”

Kadri Not In The Best Shape

from Jonas Siegel of TSN,

Marlies training camp began with a thud for Nazem Kadri.

Among the most hyped Leaf prospects, but still short on serious production, Kadri kicked off his third season in the American Hockey League with underwhelming results, notably a lacking physical fitness.

"His body fat today is probably in the bottom three to five guys in our whole camp and that's unacceptable," said Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins. "That's the easiest part of coming into camp is eating correctly and training correctly.

"There's just no coming off if you're an athlete," Eakins continued. "It's no different than the normal person. You make your choice. You can either go sit on the couch, put your feet up and have a bag of potato chips or you can go on the couch and put your feet up and grab some carrots and some apples."

Another #87

from Chris Johnston of the CP at the Hamilton Spectator,

Leo Komarov will be one of the new kids in town around the American Hockey League this season and it shouldn’t take him too long to get noticed.

The new Toronto Marlies forward has selected sweater No. 87 — a bold move given that Sidney Crosby was the only player in either the AHL or NHL to wear it last season. An agitator on the ice, Komarov is bound to hear about his number from opponents.

“I don’t really care,” he said Thursday after the Marlies opened training camp. “It’s my choice and it’s my number. I wouldn’t take 99, but it doesn’t really matter if you’ve got 87 or 10 or something like that. It’s like whatever, dude.”

Norfolk Takes 3-0 Series Lead Against Toronto In The Calder Cup Final

But the only goal of the game, in OT, was filled with controversy…

Rule 83.4 of the AHL rule book,  “If the puck is shot on goal during a delayed off-side, the play shall be allowed to continue under the normal clearing-the-zone rules. Should the puck, as a result of this shot, enter the defending team’s goal during a delayed off-side, either directly or off the goalkeeper, a player or an official on the ice, the goal shall be disallowed as the original shot was off-side. The fact that the attacking team may have cleared the zone prior to the puck entering the goal has no bearing on this ruling.”

added 10:38am, The AHL released a statement regarding the goal which you can read below…

News from the Farm: 10/21/10

If you’re looking for an update on Aunt Bessie’s cow, or information on last summer’s harvest, look on.

If, however, you’re looking for news and information on the top minor league affiliates of the NHL’s Southeast Division clubs, you’re in the right place.

In years past, I would run News from Norfolk as a regular feature on Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate and now, News from the Farm will feature the Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, Hershey Bears and Rochester Americans along with the Admirals, to follow the progress of the Southeast’s future stars at the AHL level (and, at least for now, Michael Nylander and Sheldon Souray too).

We’ll look at game results, standings, league and team-leading scorers and goaltenders, pick a player of the week, have a glance at the schedule ahead and keep you abreast of any other developments for these players and their clubs.

Thursday seemed as good a day as any for this weekly feature, so that’s where it will be slotted in to start (and this week, as the first installment, there’s plenty of AHL action to catch up on).

Without further delay, News from the Farm:

Doug Gilmour is headed back to his hometown, leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs organization to become head coach of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs.

The former Leafs captain had been an assistant coach with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies since August, and was the Leafs’ professional development adviser for two seasons before that.
