If I may steal a line or two from Sir Paul, Memory “Lane is in my ears and in my eyes…” These are some of my earliest and favorite Blackhawk memories.
The Program / Bobby Hull
My late Uncle Joe (and Godfather) attended a Hawks game during the 1968 - 1969 season. After the game he brought the program (a 65 page booklet which cost a quarter) to a bar near the old Chicago Stadium, where the players would hang out after the game. He got several Hawks to sign it, including, Phil Esposito (Yeah, we traded him) Stan Mikita, Wayne Maki, Pierre Pilote, Dennis Hull, and Bobby Hull. When The Golden Jet signed the book, he also went through all the pages signing every picture of him to “Vince, Best Wishes”. My uncle bought him a drink, which he of course accepted, and moved on. When it was Bobby’s turn for a round later on, he told the bartender “..and one for my friend Joe” When my uncle left the bar later that evening, Bobby yelled across the bar, “Thanks again for the drink Joe, say hi to your nephew for me.” (Btw, in the back of the program was an ad for the Chicago Basketball Bulls. Seats sold from $2. - $3.50. Court side seats could be purchased for a hefty $5)
The Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning share a home state, divisional alignment and the perks of leaving their home rinks to 80 degree-plus temperatures on the regular.
Their tenure as National Hockey League member franchises is nearly identical as well, with Tampa entering the league for the 1992-93 season and Florida one year later.
But you won’t find much evidence of a rivalry when speaking to current players from these clubs and, from members of the organizations of years gone by, what once sounded like legitimate hostilities have either fizzled into forced assertions or a longing for the good ol’ days.
It can’t hold a candle to the long-standing, emotionally charged levels of Calgary/Edmonton, Boston/Montreal or Colorado/Detroit.
It’s not likely to ever split households, a la Islanders/Rangers or Canadiens/Maple Leafs.
And, though both teams have had their share of supreme talents over the years, the odds of a superstar-driven rivalry, as in Ovechkin-Crosby/Capitals-Penguins, between the Lightning and Panthers are poor.
But there has to be something there still, right?

Greats from the Chicago Blackhawks, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito and Denis Savard in a Chicago furniture TV ad.
from the Chicago Blackhawks,
Former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender and Hockey Hall of Fame member Tony Esposito has joined the Chicago Blackhawks family as an official Blackhawks Ambassador. Esposito will join Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita in representing the Chicago Blackhawks at events at the United Center and throughout the Chicagoland area.
“It is a great honor to be asked back into the Blackhawks family,” said Esposito. “In my heart, I have always been and always will be a Blackhawk. I want to thank Rocky Wirtz and John McDonough for giving me the opportunity to come back to the Blackhawks organization. I love the new approach the team is taking. Everything about the Blackhawks is very upbeat and I am proud to be a part of this new beginning.”
