Now Holmstrom Can Go Home

via Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo on 2/10/12,

In March 1998, late in his second season with the Detroit Red Wings, Holmstrom gave up No. 15 to newly acquired veteran Dmitri Mironov. He switched to No. 96 to honor the year he arrived in the NHL, but coach Scotty Bowman suggested something else.

The details have gotten hazy, and they depend on who you talk to. But the conversation went something like this:

“You should wear 98,” Bowman said.

“What do you mean?” Holmstrom said. “Why?”

“Because that’s the year you’ll be going home.”

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Scotty Bowman has coached a thousand players, but no one quite like Tomas Holmstrom. Here was a guy who came over from Sweden with none of the usual skills of a European forward, but something else: Determination so immense it was tangible.

Holmstrom’s willingness to go where no one else would go — the front of the net— earned him a distinguished career with the Red Wings, but one that he’s ready to call over. He informed the club this afternoon that he’s done playing. The announcement will be made formal later this week, a person familiar with the situation told the Free Press.

Should Tomas Holmstrom Return For Another Year?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Within the next couple of weeks, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland plans to meet with Tomas Holmstrom to discuss his future.

If Holmstrom says he’s done with professional hockey, well, that’s that.

If Holmstrom says he wants to play on, the Wings will have some hard thinking to do.

Holmstrom is a special, special player to the Wings. He’s been with them since 1996, has helped them win four Stanley Cups, has been a huge part of the phenomenal success the franchise has enjoyed since the mid-90s. He’s something of a folk hero for the way he didn’t let a dearth of skill and speed stop him from living his dream. He’s pioneered playing in front of the net. He’s aggravated many an opposing goaltender, deflected many a teammate’s shot.

He’s also 39 years old, and has played more than 1,000 NHL games, and hard games at that. His knees are a perennial point of soreness for him. He’s still got that knack for getting to the front of the net and hovering there, an asset that’s been a huge part of the Wings’ power play success for a decade and a half, but his effectiveness has been limited by the emphasis on shot blocking by penalty killers. He can’t deflect shots if the puck never gets near him.

“You never know how long you’re going to play, maybe this is my last year, or maybe there’s one more, who knows.  But for sure, it’s an end of the road, but you have fun, suck it in and see what happens. … This is the best time of the year.”

Homer’s Night

Tonight Tomas Holmstrom will play in his 1000th NHL game, all with the Detroit Red Wings.

But did you know his first NHL was typical Holmstrom style?

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo,

His English has improved, but it’s all relative. His accent used to be so thick that people couldn’t even guess where he was from. Now at least they try. “They go, ‘Are you French Canadian?’ ” Holmstrom said. ” ‘Yeah. Oui.’ “

His skating has improved, too. But again, it’s all relative. Holmstrom will become only the 48th man in NHL history to play 1,000 regular-season games with one team, and according to the man who discovered him, Hakan Andersson, the Wings’ director of European scouting, “he’s the worst skater of them all.”

39 Today, Holmstrom Still Playing In The NHL

I thought some of you would enjoy this ‘Bowmanism’ regarding Tomas Holmstrom…

from a Windsor Star story on February 7, 2008,

“When I got over here Scotty (Bowman) told me never to leave the front of the net,” said Holmstrom, who has 20 goals and 36 points in 44 games. “He said. ‘Don’t even go into the corner, just stay in front.’

“I don’t mind it (playing in front); sooner or later the puck is going to come to the front of the net because that’s where everything happens.”

Under Bowman, Holmstrom had to serve a sometimes difficult apprenticeship.

With the master tactician’s genius for keeping his players off-balance, Holmstrom dedicated himself to working maniacally hoping Bowman would take notice. In his second season (1997-98), Holmstrom was still unsure of whether he was succeeding.

As he was explaining to reporters why he’d chosen No. 96 as his new number after giving up 15 to recently acquired veteran Dmitri Mironov, Bowman strolled by hearing it was because he’d arrived in Detroit in 1996.

The crusty coach told him he should’ve taken 98 because that was the year he was going back to Sweden.

While reporters laughed, a straight-faced Holmstrom interrupted saying, “No, I think he means it.”

Afternoon Line

(Homer’s) one of the few guys that laid down.  He’s a little sensitive, but yet he can stand in front of the net and face slap shots coming at him at 100 miles per hour. Go figure that one out. He’s afraid of needles, but not afraid of pucks.”

Holmstrom Takes A Puck To The Face

Late in the first period, Tomas Holmstrom took a puck to the face while along the boards in the defensive zone.  He did not return for the 2nd period but no word from the Wings yet.

Also, Brian Rafalski was a late scratch, after taking a bump to the back according to Babcock.

Pest- Perry Or Holmstrom?

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

Both are among the most respected members of their respective teams. Both make their living around the net. And both have a way of riling up the opposition — especially the goalies.

Whether it’s part of the reason why they’re so effective or whether they just delight in being a nuisance, the Ducks’ Corey Perry and Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom are equally good at providing offense and digging their way under the skin of the players they go up against.

Perry, 25, is the more naturally talented player and he leads the Ducks with 28 points this season, including 12 goals. Holmstrom, 37, has just six goals but he’s got 220 in his career and is arguably the best at battling for position inside and screening a goalie for his teammates.

Sometimes their zeal for competition straddles the line or crosses over it. But Perry and Holmstrom probably wouldn’t be as effective as they are without playing on the edge.

Tomas Holmstrom was delighted, and somewhat touched, to learn Tuesday that he is the Detroit Red Wings’ nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,’’ Holmstrom said. “I never heard about the award.’‘

It’s given to the player who best demonstrates sportsmanship, perseverance and dedication to hockey. He was selected by the Detroit chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Holmstrom Wants To Remain A Red Wing

from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,

If you find it hard to imagine Tomas Holmstrom wearing anything but the winged wheel on his sweater, so does he.

“Detroit has been so good to me over the years,” said Holmstrom, who will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. “I have been fortunate to be part of four Stanley Cup teams here. I want to stay here and finish my career here.”

General manager Ken Holland feels the same way. He’s already had one brief conversation with Holmstrom’s agent, Howard Gourwitz. Holmstrom said he would consider anything from a one-year to a three-year deal.

Tomas Holmstrom’s ailing left knee has forced him to withdraw from the Swedish Olympic team, enabling Detroit Red Wings teammate Johan Franzen to take his place, according to Sweden’s Expressen.

Franzen has played only three games since returning from knee surgery, which idled him for four months. But he is skating well and said he feels good. It will be his first Olympic appearance.

Complaining About Holmstrom

from Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province,

On Tuesday when Niklas Kronwall scored to make it 2-2 early in the second, Holmstrom not once, not twice, but three times pushed Alex Edler out of the way while at the same time bumping against Roberto Luongo.

Then on Pavel Datsyuk’s go-ahead goal that made it 4-3 on the power play, Holmstrom was partially tying up Willie Mitchell in front of Luongo. You could argue that had it been Mitchell doing the same thing he’d be called for interference.

In football it’s called offensive interference; in the NHL it’s called when and if the refs feel like it.

Wings Lose Holmstrom 3-5 Weeks

From Ansar Khan at Mlive:

Update from Friday’s practice: The Wings announced that Tomas Holmstrom will have surgery to repair a sports hernia and will be out three-to-five weeks.

An MRI revealed a small tear in his groin. Holmstrom hopes to have the surgery early next week in Philadelphia.

He had the same procedure on June 11, but on the other side. He said this tear is smaller, so he’s optimistic he won’t be idled as long. He’s hoping to return with about 10 games remaining in the regular season.

Holmstrom Being Holmstrom

from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,

There’s apparently just no sanctuary from abuse for Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom.

Even in the Wings dressing room, the slashes and cross checks turn into verbal jabs as Holmstrom readied himself to join a photo shoot for an upcoming story for Men’s Health Magazine.  “How did you get picked for that?” queried Kirk Maltby. “They must have been looking for someone to show what not to do.”

Holmstrom merely smiles. The veteran winger is doing a lot of that lately.

The 35-year-old Swede has scored in all five game this season and leads the NHL in scoring percentage by converting half of the 10 shots he’s taken.  “I should shoot more,” Holmstrom said.

Good News for Wings Fans

From Dave Waddell via the National Post:

Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom, who was injured Wednesday when he was dumped by Pittsburgh defenceman Hal Gill, said he’s optimistic he’ll play in tonight’s Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final [...]

“Yeah, that’s how it looks like,” Holmstrom said when asked if he’ll play tonight. “It feels good.”

While opting not to discuss the nature of the injury, Holmstrom said it’s unrelated to his groin problem that caused him to miss almost all of March.

Today, some interviews with the Detroit Red Wings.  Q&A’s featuring coach Mike Babcock, Tomas Holmstrom and Nicklas Lidstrom.

Q. A Franzen update? But can you also talk about what this has been like for him for him to be playing as well as he was and then have to watch.

COACH MIKE BABCOCK: Obviously it’s real difficult for him. It’s part of playoff hockey, though. Things like this happen. You know, the bottom line is you just got to overcome it. Every team gets injured.

Poor Homer

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,

Pity Tomas Holmstrom.

How often are you going to see those three words in a row?

But really. For the second time in as many Western Conference finals, the Detroit Red Wings’ hard-headed Swede, who has made a living out of obstructing goaltenders’ vision and scoring garbage goals no longer than his hockey stick, is deserving of our sympathy. A limited amount. Certain terms and conditions may apply. See your dealer for details.

“I pulled something in the groin area,’’ Holmstrom said. “I couldn’t push away (in practice Friday). Of course I’m concerned. I had something earlier this year but it went away, but never this bad.’‘

Shoot For Holmstrom’s Stick

from the Detroit Free Press (Tuesday edition) via the Santa Barbara News-Press,

Now 34, Holmstrom’s saga reveals a player who is putting up career numbers on a regular basis, with 29 goals two seasons ago, 30 last season and on pace for 43 this season. Entering tonight’s game against St. Louis, Holmstrom is tied with linemate Pavel Datsyuk for second on the team in scoring with 16 points after 17 games.

The courage Holmstrom displays as he stands in the path of vulcanized rubber on a nightly basis has won him many admirers, from those who shoot at him to those who emulate him.

Nicklas Lidstrom, who almost always is on the ice at the same time as Holmstrom and his line with Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, exemplifies the former. Having Holmstrom in front of the net allows Lidstrom the freedom to miss the net on purpose at times.

‘‘You can see his stick, so you try to shoot it where Homer’s stick is,’’ Lidstrom said. ‘‘So sometimes you shoot it wide because you know he is going to try to get it or deflect it into the net.’‘
