Report- The Florida Panthers Will Have A New Head Coach

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,

Before Monday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, a plane circled BB&T Center in Sunrise towing the message: ‘Rowe must go! Call him a cab!’

The first part of the message is obvious; the second is in reference to former coach Gerard Gallant getting a cab outside Raleigh’s PNC Arena after he was fired and replaced by Rowe following a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 27.

It has become clear Rowe’s days as interim head coach of the Panthers are numbered.

Although Rowe previously said he would be interested in keeping the Florida coaching job full time although after this team’s downward spiral, it will not happen.

The Panthers have officially said they will discuss the situation once this season comes to a close on Sunday night.

On Monday, numerous sources told the Miami Herald Rowe would not return behind the bench.

Tom Rowe Still Hot After Loss To The Sabres

from Harvey Fialkov of the SunSentinel,

Florida Panthers coach Tom Rowe was still unhappy about 18 hours after he felt his players weren’t, “mentally or physically,’’ prepared in a deflating 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday and warned them against a similar effort in the final seven games of the regular season.

Even though the majority of the Panthers’ young core has long-term contracts, Rowe said while they may not be playing for jobs in the NHL, they are playing for a possible change of address.

“Just because guys don’t have contracts, doesn’t mean they can’t get traded either,” Rowe said before the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at the Air Canada Centre. “They got to perform. Last night was unacceptable. We beat Chicago 7-0 playing good, then we got into Buffalo for a very, very big game and we come up with a 4-2 loss and they didn’t compete the way they were supposed to.

“At the end of the day, contracts are great. We did it for salary-cap reasons, but it doesn’t mean guys are going to retire [with the Panthers] if they keep playing like they did.”

Florida Pantheres struggling despite Vanek acquisition

From the Miami Herald's George Richards:

The Florida Panthers made a nice deal at the trade deadline to help with their run to the playoffs.

Although that postseason push has stalled, don’t blame Thomas Vanek for it.

Florida goes into Friday’s game against the Minnesota Wild with losses in six of its past seven games including all three since acquiring Vanek from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a third round draft pick and depth defenseman Dylan McIlrath.

Vanek, who spent the past two seasons with the Wild before having the final year (this one) of his contract bought out, scored his first goal with the Panthers in Florida’s eventual 5-2 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday.

“He’s a really good player and we knew what we were getting when we traded for him,” interim head coach Tom Rowe said Friday morning. “He has obviously brought the offense and has a real confidence about himself in the locker room, really calm on the bench. That rubs off on everyone.”

Shake Ups in Carolina

From NBC17.com,

The Carolina Hurricanes are shaking up Peter Laviolette’s coaching staff.

The Hurricanes announced Monday that one of Laviolette’s assistants and the coach of their top minor-league affiliate are switching jobs.  Tom Rowe is leaving Albany to become an assistant with Carolina, and Jeff Daniels is leaving the NHL club to take over as coach and general manager of the River Rats.

Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said the switch gives Daniels a chance to run his own team while the addition of Rowe infuses the Hurricanes’ coaching staff with fresh ideas.
