Tom Dundon’s Team

from Tom Gulitti of NHL.com,

Tom Dundon stood off to the side, watching and proudly listening to coach Rod Brind'Amour talk to the media about the work ethic, commitment and the elevated expectations that have propelled the Carolina Hurricanes into the Eastern Conference Final.

"What's good is it kind of validates [everything]," the Hurricanes owner said after his team completed a four-game sweep of the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference Second Round with a 5-2 win on Friday. "Rod does things the right way and everybody just does things the right way.

"When things weren't going good earlier in the year, he didn't get mad at anybody, he didn't blame anybody and nobody gave up on the plan. … The fact that the players in the organization stuck with it and are getting this now is pretty good."

Should The NHL Playoff Format Be Expanded?

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,

Dundon also raised eyebrows earlier this season when he spoke out publicly about his desire to expand the playoff field. It raised eyebrows only because it’s uncommon for NHL owners to publicly discuss that kind of thing. Especially when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is currently on record as saying he has no interest in expanding the playoff field past the current 16 teams.

Dundon is undeterred, however, and it’s an idea he will keep pushing.

“It just makes so much sense to me,” the ‘Canes owner reiterated Tuesday.

He would love to see a best-of-three series between No. 7 and No. 10 and between No. 8 and No. 9 in each conference before the 16-team playoffs begin.

I love it, too.

I mean, you can start a best-of-three series on the Sunday after the regular season ends and have it wrapped up by Wednesday. We’re not talking about an onerous time commitment.

Evening Line Part 2- Tom Dundon On Don Cherry

“I enjoyed it, I think he’s interesting. I like the fact that he has an opinion

“What I try to do, when you hear that, is I try to look at and think do I agree? Is there something malicious, is there something that is treating other people the wrong way when you do it? It never crossed my mind that it was disrespectful in any way. Now that I’ve thought it through I just disagree with him. I don’t think it has anything to do with anybody else but us.

“The fact he brought some attention to us and probably made it better for us, I appreciate what he did.”

“I don’t want an apology, he can say what he wants to say. I should thank him. It was good for us.”

Tom Dundon, The Owner Of The Carolina Hurricanes On Expanding The Playoffs

from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star,

...if Dundon had his way, he said he’d include as many as 24 teams in the post-season while reducing the regular season from 82 to 78 games. While critics have argued expanding the playoffs would make the regular season less relevant, Dundon makes a case for the opposite.

“I just think it makes the regular season much more interesting,” Dundon said. “You don’t get the last two months where some teams aren’t trying anymore and you get a lot of bad games. If everyone’s in it all year fighting for seeds and fighting for playoffs, I think it’s just a better product.”

Dundon, for his part, acknowledges a considerable stumbling block to making such a change. Commissioner Gary Bettman isn’t an advocate of playoff expansion. Which is not to say Bettman’s mind can’t change. It wasn’t long ago that Bettman was among the pro-sports commissioners who saw gambling as a scourge. In October the NHL signed a sports-betting partnership with MGM Resorts. Which is perhaps why Dundon offered up a prediction of sorts.

“I think something around (playoff expansion) ultimately gets done, because there’s no one that loses,” Dundon said. “I will keep speaking to people about it, and we’ll keep trying. I think this is something that’s got a real chance.”

All Tom Dundon

Dundon joined Greg Wyshynski and Emily Kaplan on the latest episode of ESPN on Ice for a wide-ranging interview. Here are a few highlights.

On being a vocal owner:

"I've heard that new owners don't say much initially -- and not sure that's going to work for me."

On rumors that the Hurricanes have been lowballing GM and coaching candidates:

"If I thought that the money and the talent are one-to-one correlated, then I would spend the money. But I believe we can fit really talented people within our budget, and me looking at other people's determination of the market, in paying people -- it's not something I would ever do.

"If I can't find the person who is undervalued and give them the chance at a price I think is fair, and give them a chance to build their market value and build the team, then I might move to a different plan. But I do think it would be surprising if there were only 30 people in the world who could do these jobs. We're looking for the talent, not the résumé."

Afternoon Line- Tom Dundon

“It’s fairly obvious on the hockey side we aren’t good enough to make the playoffs, the record tells you who you are. We were pretty healthy and we weren’t good enough.

“We’re probably not hard enough to play against. We probably don’t score enough. And there’s something missing in terms of our engagement.”
