Finances Dictate Sabres’ Roster Moves

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Understand, the beef here isn’t about Adam, Kennedy, Niedermayer or Gerbe in particular. It’s about management’s approach in general. The Sabres are hoping to make the playoffs, but there’s a big difference between hoping to reach the postseason and doing what’s required to get there.

Almost every move General Manager Darcy Regier has made since the lockout has been based on attrition, not competition, and money, not winning. The Sabres too often this year looked like they were going through the motions, much like Regier did last summer. Their awakening going into the all-star break could be too late.

“I’ve talked to about five or six teams, and I’m looking at what might be the right fit and not just the money.  I just want the opportunity to come in and play a lot and make an impact.’‘

-Tim Kennedy, an unrestricted free agent after the Sabres bought-out his contract.  More on Kennedy and other MSU alumni from Neil Koepke of the Lansing State Journal.

Why Was Tim Kennedy Waived?

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Darcy Regier never came across as an unseemly character, so you wanted to take him at his word Tuesday when he insisted there were no ulterior motives for waiving Tim Kennedy four days after the South Buffalo native was awarded a one-year contract worth $1 million in arbitration.

Regier said he held no resentment toward Kennedy after he had the audacity to challenge the Sabres over money. The general manager made it clear that he was not intending to send a message to other players in the future. The decision to buy out the hometown winger was just, well, you know, business.

Sabres Place Tim Kennedy On Waivers

via TSN,

The Buffalo Sabres have placed forward Tim Kennedy on waivers. If he clears, it’s expected that the team will buy out the remainder of his contract.

Kennedy, 24, scored 10 goals and 16 assists in 78 games last season for the Sabres. He re-signed with Buffalo as a restricted free agent on July 29, and is due to earn $1 million next season.

According the capgeek.com, a buyout would cost the Sabres $333,333 over two years, with a reduced cap hit of $166,667 this season instead of $1 million.
