from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Disgraced former NHLPA executive director Ted Saskin is scheduled to testify tomorrow on behalf of the NHL and against the interests of the union he once represented, in an arbitration hearing that has critical implications for the Rangers, The Post has learned.
The issue at hand concerns the status of drafted European players who do not sign before June 2 of the second calendar year following their selections. Article 8.6 of the CBA states that clubs lose their rights to such players if they are not signed on or by that date.

A hockey rumor “blogger,” whose hit-to-miss ratio rivals that of a visually impaired Imperial stormtrooper, reported that the New York Rangers are going to trade center Scott Gomez in order to open up cap space to sign free agent Mats Sundin. The Vancouver Canucks were named as the likely destination.

from ESPN with information from the AP,
The National Hockey League Players’ Association has reached a financial settlement with former executive director Ted Saskin, The Globe and Mail of Toronto reported.
Saskin, who was fired last May after allegedly accessing players’ e-mail accounts, will be paid about $400,000 in a settlement reached with the NHLPA executive board, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources.
Current NHLPA executive Paul Kelly said a settlement had been “consummated” but did not comment on the amount, according to report.

from Rick Wethead of the Toronto Star
During Saskin’s tenure at the union, emails reveal that NHL chief legal officer and deputy commissioner Bill Daly passed on to Saskin several suggestions about which players and union staff might be conspiring against him. Other emails reveal Saskin had become especially close to Daly and Gary Bettman after his hiring.
In advance of a meeting in Russia in autumn 2006, Saskin emailed the NHL commissioner: “Looks like Bill is getting the Moscow trip in September; I may send Chelios.”
In a response the same day Bettman deadpanned: “With a one-way ticket (cc not bd)?”
