Edmonton Extends Contract Of Tambellini

via a press release from the Edmonton Oilers,

President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe announced today the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on a new contract for General Manager Steve Tambellini.

Kevin Lowe says, “Three years ago we asked Steve to begin a rebuild which we all know hasn’t been easy.  However, Oilers fans can take some consolation in the fact that Steve and his staff have acquired some amazing talent which will most definitely be the cornerstone to future sustained success for the Edmonton Oilers.”

Oilers Don’t Want To Talk About Another Lottery Pick

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Right now Tambellini’s club is coming off three wins in 12 games in December. They’ve lost seven in a row away from Rexall Place and have the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars next, on what is turning into more of a death march than a road trip. Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall — who was very good against the New York Islanders on Saturday with three goalposts and 10 shots directed at Evgeni Nabokov’s net — and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are a joy to watch. But they aren’t getting nearly enough scoring help. Or leadership help, in some cases.

Where does Tambellini want to finish? If they get 45 points in their last 45 games, that’s 78 points, a 16-point improvement over last year.

“I’m not going to put a number on it. I want to finish as high as possible,” he said. “Again, I don’t want a lottery pick.”

They’re 10 points out of eighth spot, but more importantly have four teams — Dallas, the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche and Phoenix Coyotes — to climb over.

“I think our team knows they have the skill, but the mental toughness to bring it every night is a lot of work. I certainly want to see the group commitment back (from the 8-2-2 start). I want to see our veteran players express themselves and contribute,” he said. “I think they’ve worked hard, but we can be better.”

Fraser Feud

image

It has been common to just use the word gate behind any misunderstanding or wrongdoing. In this case, I don’t believe that the Oilers set out to pull the wool over the heads of the Kings. So, I hereby propose this subject be called the Fraser Feud.

I was in St. Paul at the NHL entry draft amidst all of the Ryan Smyth trade talk, and everyone was excited about it, no matter what team they were there representing or covering. TSN cameramen were telling me how wonderful they felt the move would be for Edmonton. The heart of the matter seemed to be at what cost.

Edmonton GM In the Spotlight

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

There are some astute people in the hockey world who believe Steve Tambellini has arrived at ‘The Moment’ in his young career as an NHL general manager.

Those people believe this is his time to step out from the crowd and be bold.

And that what happens next will define him.

If you are looking at Tambellini defining himself as a GM, so far the definition hasn’t been all that dynamic.

So far the perception of Tambellini has been the polar opposite to Brian Burke. Not that that’s a bad thing. But it is interesting because Tambellini worked as an assistant to Burke with the Vancouver Canucks.

Burke has bluster, swagger, confidence and a damn-the-torpedo belief he wears on his sleeve. Tambellini comes across as almost timid by comparison. He is soft spoken, quiet, cautious and keeps almost everything up his sleeve.

All Steve Tambellini

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

There was a changing of the guard over the summer, with 50-year-old Steve Tambellini stepping into Kevin Lowe’s shoes as the Edmonton Oilers general manager….

Q: Your last NHL playing days were in Vancouver. How did you get into management?

A: At the time, I was going back and forth between playing in Europe and if I was quitting, I thought I’d end up in private business, because the opportunities in the National Hockey League or pro sport are very limited. But (Canucks GM) Pat Quinn called me and asked if I’d join the club.
