Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II

This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.

Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk

Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.

Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava

Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

The State of Hockey in Russia

The Russian National Team has taken great strides towards regaining past international hockey glory in the last few years. Spurred on by back-to-back World Championship victories with two straight wins over Team Canada in 2008 and 2009 (including a win on Canada’s home ice in 2008), Russia had seemed to finally regain their duo-superpower status with their longtime Canadian rivals. That is until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where the Russians were soundly thumped 7-3 by the home side in their quarterfinal matchup. Perhaps, Team Russia goalie; Ilya Bryzgalov, summed up the debacle best by stating that Team Canada played like “gorillas coming out of a cage.”

On the heels of their defeat in Vancouver, many of Russia’s Olympic core squad vowed to gain a measure of revenge at the 2010 World Championships in Germany three months later. Although Russia defeated a relatively undermanned Canadian squad, their efforts, once again, ended in failure with an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the championship final.

Kozlov Still Looking For Work In The NHL

from Craig Custance of The Sporting News,

Kozlov’s North American agent still hasn’t closed the door on another season in the NHL for the veteran forward.

“He has not ruled out the NHL,” agent Scott Lites told Sporting News on Friday morning. “That’s for sure.”

Kozlov is in Russia visiting his father and has been extended a couple tryout offers by NHL teams, although it’s unlikely he’d accept that option.

But there’s certainly some interest in a player who is just one season removed from a 26-goal, 76-point year with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2008-09.

Afternoon Line

“To me, this was the best team in 11 years of the organization,.  This franchise had the best players. Right now, they can not blame [Ilya] Kovalchuk or [Slava] Kozlov. They have to take responsibility, because I think ownership did everything right, signed good players, they have a good goalie, good defense—but something is missing. I think we are missing from the coaching staff. Looks like they have fun, but unfortunately in the NHL you have to work. You have to prepare for every game.

“There are lots of good teams in the NHL and you think you are a good team if you see the roster. That doesn’t work in this league. You have to do homework and work hard. I think I can put a big question mark that they weren’t preparing.”

-Slava Kozlov of the Atlanta Thrashers.  More from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This may be a first, I have never heard Kozlov cal anyone out.

Kozlov Will Waive NTC For The Right Situation

from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Thrashers forward Slava Kozlov has requested a trade due to his lack of playing time and would be willing to waive his no trade clause, he told me on Friday.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be on this team or another team,” Kozlov said. “If we can find a team which I like and which is good for me and my family I will go. If not, I’m going to be here. …

With coach not playing me, what can you do? That’s why I feel I could go play for somebody that needs my help. Is so, I’ll waive my no trade clause.”

Who Would You Choose?

They are both the same age, player A is actually five days older than player B.

Let’s look at career stats:

Player A, regular season- 1051 games, 322 goals, 527 assists, 859 points and -95

Player B, regular season- 1179 games, 356 goals, 495 assists, 851 points and +95

How about the playoffs you ask?

Kozlov’s Consecutive Games Played Streak Ends With A Benching

from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Thrashers veteran Slava Kozlov will be scratched from tonight’s game at Tampa Bay. He hold the franchise record for consecutive games played at 251, which will end tonight.

“I hate to be the grim reaper,” Thrashers coach John Anderson said. “I have to do what I think is best for the team at the time. Nothing is set in stone. Sometimes it helps players, it helps them get a little more motivated. Certainly I don’t like to do it, but I have to do what I think is best for the hockey team at that certain time.”

Morning Line

(Slava) Kozlov has 8 goals, 15 assists and is a –14 in 50 games played. His current salary pays him $3.67 million.

After this season, I believe the next time we’ll see Slava Kozlov on the ice for the Thrashers is when he watches his #13 jersey raised to the rafters.

Staying Fit Allows Kozlov To Play On

from Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Thrashers coach John Anderson routinely offered his oldest players the option of skipping a morning skate. Former Thrasher Mathieu Schneider, 39, frequently took him up on it. Kozlov didn’t.

His work didn’t start when the season did.

“I was here most of the summer, and he was in the gym every day,” Anderson said.

Kozlov learned those work habits when he broke into the league with the Detroit Red Wings. He was an 18-year-old Russian kid who could bench press 130 pounds twice.

“I was so skinny,” Kozlov said. “Detroit was patient with me.”

He watched his Russian and Canadian teammates. He learned from Steve Yzerman, who didn’t smoke, didn’t drink and always worked out.

“Fitness is No. 1,” Kozlov said. “If you’re not going to take care of your body, it’s going to be tough to play. When I was 18, 20, I didn’t go to the gym every day. Now, I do.”

Kozlov Talks About Bad Season

from the Thrashers Blog at the AJC,

Kozlov said he has no regrets about signing with the Thrashers again, and that all they really need is a superstar defenseman to contend. No problem, right?

“This team needs a foundation, defensively - like a [Zdeno] Chara or [Nicklas] Lidstrom. Good teams, they have one or two very good defensemen who can play 30-35 [minutes per game]. Like [Chris] Pronger on Anaheim - one of those guys. They’re hard to find, but that’s what we need.

Kozlov Won’t Waive NTC

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Since I’m trying to prepare for every possible scenario as the trade deadline approaches, I’ve been trying to gauge who might get dealt if the Thrashers completely fall out of the race and become sellers. Obviously there’s Hossa, and we’ve talked about Mark Recchi and Bobby Holik’s possible value. But what about Slava Kozlov? He’s another veteran with playoff experience and a Stanley Cup. His numbers are down, but he could still be attractive at the deadline. Well, forget it. He has a no-trade clause that extends the length of his contract and he said he’s not waiving it. “I signed this summer, I could pick any team but I like it here. I don’t think I’m going to waive it. I just signed, what? Six months ago?”
