Slava Fetisov On Slava Voynov

from Geneen Pipher of Hockey VIPs,

Former NHL star and Hockey Hall of Famer Vyacheslav Fetisov, who now serves in the Russian senate, said Voynov has to accept responsibility for his actions.

“I think he got off light,” the Detroit Red Wings legend told Russia’s TASS news agency.  “[Voynov] laid hands on a woman and he has to answer for it. And it will be a lesson for everyone. I could never let myself hit a woman in my life and I never will.”

As for his future prospects, Fetisov said it is unclear how this incident will affect Voynov’s career but suggested other players should learn from his mistakes.

“It is difficult to tell if [the incident] influences his further career or not,” he said.  “I can only assume Voynov will continue playing in the United States, but I don’t know his plans.  He must draw the right conclusions and go through this serious test [first].

“He has been under the pressure of public attention and the media for a long time.  For others, I’m sure, it will be a didactic moment.”

Fetisov Plays Again

from the CP at TSN,

Former NHL star Slava Fetisov took to the ice with CSKA Moscow on Friday, subjecting his 51-year-old body to the pounding of a competitive Continental Hockey League game.

“It’s a very good game,” a sweaty Fetisov said in televised comments after the first period with the game deadlocked at 0-0. “Both teams are playing at maximum speed. The game is very intense.”

added 4:35pm, TSN has updated the link and Fetisov says he does not plan to continue playing.

This is the reason I didn’t really promote his return, I just had a feeling it was a one game shot.

Rivaling the NHL

From Allan Maki at the Globe & Mail,

Fetisov, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, was quoted on the Russiatoday website endorsing what will be called the Continental Hockey League and include teams outside of Russia.

“At the moment, the top players will continue playing in the NHL because they believe it’s the best league in the word,” Fetisov said. “But if our league gains the same status as our North American counterparts, the new Ovechkins, Kovalchuks and Datsyuks will stay here because they’ll be playing in a very competitive and financially competitive league.”

Fetisov said the new league will also stage a draft like the NHL.

“If we’re able to draft players from the various European leagues, Canadians added to our talent in Russia, we’ll definitely be a serious contender to the NHL.
