Sabres Finally Hit The Trifecta

Before last night’s 3-2 overtime win in Florida, the Buffalo Sabres since last March had literally as many three-game winning streaks as they had ownership changes.

So perhaps you can understand why some Sabres fans were feeling a bit giddy after the victory, to the point of making the game-winning goal scorer a trending topic on Twitter.

Noone here is planning a Stanley Cup parade just yet, but there’s a newfound wave of optimism in the midst of a healthy 12-4-1 run that has Buffalo back in the playoff conversation.

While the successful power play has been a big part of the turnaround, there’s also been a steady improvement in the play of the defense, even during the streak itself.  In the first eleven games of this run, Buffalo gave up more than three goals five times.  In the past six games, it’s only happened once.

Nasty, Gutsy, Scary = Sabres Win

That was a gutsy Buffalo win last night (2-1 in overtime) over division rival Montreal.  There was a whole lot of hitting, yapping, pushing and shoving going on.  Why we don’t see more of this nasty attitude from the Sabres is the subject of another conversation.

Having a threat like Mike Cammalleri off the ice for most of the game certainly made the task less formidable, but beggars can’t be choosers.  And let’s not forget that Buffalo was missing its most potent point getter (Derek Roy, 35 points in 35 games) and goal scorer (Drew Stafford, 15 goals in 30 games).  Stafford suffered a groin injury early, and it looks like he’s going to miss some time.

Great move by coach Lindy Ruff breaking up the Tyler Myers-Andrej Sekera pairing on the blue line.  The 20-year old Calder Trophy winner seems better off with a stay at home veteran as his defense partner.  Ruff felt that way during training camp when he originally played Shaone Morrisonn with Myers, but a poor start by the free agent acquisition put a damper in those plans.  Let’s see if it sticks this time.

Big sigh of relief that Max Pacioretty is going to be OK after a scary moment when he took a slap shot to the chest.  Forgive me if my heart rate shooting up from being terrified upon first seeing it was an overreaction, but it’s partly the fault of having a selective memory.  Clint Malarchuk and Richard Zednik can attest to the fact that Buffalo can be a pretty risky place to play sometimes.

Things probably won’t be much more pleasant for the Sabres on Thursday when they play in Boston.  Whatever they put in their pasta yesterday should be bottled up and brought with them on the trip.

Sabres ‘D’ Trying to Put it All Together

If you think the Sabres aren’t scoring enough goals, well, don’t blame the defense.  Buffalo’s blueliners have racked up 13 goals in 19 games.  Tonight’s opponent, the high flying Washington Capitals, ‘only’ have 12 from their defensemen.

Sure, the offensive contributions of Jordan Leopold, Steve Montador (yep, really) and Tyler Myers have been a tonic for this team as it tries to climb out of its self-dug hole.  Buffalo has gone to overtime in five straight games and has earned 9 of 10 possible points.  But let’s not kid ourselves - the Sabres will have to cut down on mistakes in their own zone if they’re serious about being contenders again.

Ryan Miller’s Place In The 2010-11 Vezina Discussion

While it certainly can’t be said with a straight face that Ryan Miller doesn’t get enough respect, there are some pundits out there who have declared, almost as a foregone conclusion, that the 30-year old Sabres franchise netminder will still be solid but won’t be able to duplicate his Vezina-worthy magic of 2009-10.

Whether because of changes in the Sabres defensive corps, having played too many games, or simply from the difficulty of maintaining such a high level of play in an ultra-competitive league where the difference in the talent level of goaltenders has shrunk significantly, discussions by many about Miller’s prospects for the upcoming season are accompanied by buzzwords and catch phrases like “dropoff” and “coming back down to earth”.

Arbitration Can Get Ugly

From James Mirtle at the Globe & Mail:

NHL salary arbitration hearings have been few and far between this summer, and there’s a reason. When cases go to a hearing, they can often get ugly, as players, agents and teams fight for dollars under the salary cap.

Washington Capitals defenceman Shaone Morrisonn is the only player who’s been through the process this off-season. He was awarded a one-year, $1.975-million (all currency U.S.) contract last Saturday after a hearing last Thursday in Toronto.

According to arbitration documents obtained by The Globe and Mail, the Capitals offered several less than flattering assessments of Morrisonn, a stay-at-home defenceman who was fourth on the team in ice time last season. Calling him “one-dimensional,” Washington argued that Morrisonn received substantial playing time in 2005-06 and 2006-07 on a weak team as a result of being “at the right place at the right time.”

The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Shaone Morrisonn to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Morrisonn, 25, played his third full season with the Capitals in 2007-08, recording 10 points (one goal, nine assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 76 games. He had a +4 plus/minus rating, including a +14 mark in the 55 games under head coach Bruce Boudreau. Morrisonn finished fourth on the team with an average of 20:16 of ice time per game. Morrisonn played in all seven Capitals playoff games, despite suffering a broken jaw, and recorded one assist.
