All Sergei Zubov

from RussianHockeyFans,

Former NHL defenceman Sergei Zubov, currently playing for SKA St. Petersburgh of the KHL, answered to fans’ questions on Russian site sportbox.ru.

Are practices in the KHL any different to practices in the NHL?

Not really, I don’t see many differences. I have to give our coach Barry Smith his due. His practices are very productive, he doesn’t lose time. After his practices I feel like I played a real game.

Is hockey level in the NHL really that much better than in the KHL?

No, the level is almost the same. Players in the KHL are as good as the NHL players. There are very skilled players in every Russian team. And our juniors are better than the Americans. However, also there are Canadiens, but I think that our players aren’t worse.

Why then Russian youngsters want to play in the NHL?

Well, despite everything, NHL is the best league in the world right now. And every player who thinks he is talented enough wants to try his luck there.

Blue Jackets Need A Puck Moving Dman - How About Zubov?

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News,

With about $10 million in cap space still available, the Jackets could turn to the trade market and target teams who are up against the cap.

Rumors suggested GM Scott Howson was in talks with San Jose about acquiring Christian Ehrhoff, but Sharks GM Doug Wilson wasn’t interested in the return of Jason Chimera. Not yet, anyway.

Tomas Kaberle of the Leafs comes to mind, but with the price GM Brian Burke is asking, I’m not sure the Jackets should go down that road. It’s not time to be so aggressive as to trade away a blue-chip prospect, so Columbus should be eyeing an option where it doesn’t have to give up a valued asset.

To me, the perfect fit is soon-to-be 39-year-old Sergei Zubov.

Stars Still Have Interest In Zubov

from Scott Noll of the Dallas Stars Blog at the Dallas Morning News,

Mike Heika just got off the phone with Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk, and here’s the GM’s take on the ESPN interview with Sergei Zubov’s agent that made it seem like the defenseman might be headed elsewhere:

From Mr. Heika:

Niewendyk said the door still is open for Sergei Zubov, but that the Stars want to make sure he is healthy. Nieuwendyk said he would like to talk with Zubov in a month or so if he has not signed with another team.

How About Zubov In New Jersey Or A Ranger?

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

...That said, I think there might be something to this—though I can’t tell you the extent of the Devils’ interest. The Devils could use a defenseman that can run the power play and Zubov might come cheap on a one-year deal.

Grossman said that there has been considerable interest in the soon-to-be 39-year-old defenseman (his birthday is July 22).

“We’ve had quite a few inquiries, six to eight teams that I would say have legitimate interest,” Grossman said. “It’s a bit of a process on both ends finding a good fit.”

The Rangers are also believed to be among the teams interested in Zubov. Dallas wanted him back, but was hoping he would accept a one-year deal with performance bonuses—which is allowed for a player 35 or older that signs a one-year deal or a player coming off a long-term injury that signs a one-year contract. (If the Devils end up re-signing Brendan Shanahan, they will probably give him a one-year deal with reachable bonuses).

The obvious concern with Zubov, besides his age, is his hip.

Koivu Would Not Have Felt Comfortable In Minnesota

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

“It was an interesting choice,” said Koivu. “We spoke to Minnesota a few times. All the talks went well, but it was more for personal reasons that I didn’t feel comfortable ... I felt that Minnesota was Mikko’s place at this point. I wanted him to have his own privacy in a way, make his own name and his own career. I just felt there were too many risks for us as brothers and as family members to join the same team and compete for the same ice time. I felt we were better off playing somewhere else.”

Stars Get Zubov Back, Parrish Makes Debut

from Tracey Myers of the Star-Telegram,

Defensive partner Matt Niskanen said it best at Thursday’s practice: “Everybody had a smile on their face today, and he’s got a lot to do with it.”

That’s the effect that Sergei Zubov has on this team. He should make his season debut tonight, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The Stars need his calm during this stormy start. They need his veteran leadership on and off the ice. And they definitely need his fantastic play….

Newly acquired right wing Mark Parrish said he couldn’t wait to get into a game situation, and he’ll get his chance tonight. He’s someone who wants to prove he has a place in this league, and that could lead to some good work fast.

Zubov Not The Savior For The Stars

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Zubov is working out on his sore hip and is expected to play his first game of the season Saturday in Boston. His return could help settle a team that is allowing a league-worst 4.22 goals per game.

But while Zubov can do a lot of things in a lot of areas, the Stars have to be better throughout the lineup if they hope to snap out of an early-season slump that has them 3-4-2 after nine games.

“He’s an elite-level defenseman who will give you 25-plus minutes a game and play in all situations. So, yeah, he can have a positive impact for us,” coach Dave Tippett said.

Decision Time For Zubov

from Jim Reeves of the Star-Telegram,

Even now, after all these years with the Stars, Zubov still isn’t completely at ease as the center of media attention. He prefers to do his thing quietly and efficiently, and then to slip away while others do the talking.

But now the Stars need him to break his code of silence. They need to hear four words from their best puck-handling defenseman, who hasn’t played since January:

“I’m ready to play.”

Sometime today, before the Stars and San Jose Sharks meet in Game 2 of their quarterfinals playoff series, would be just fine.

The puck, as they say, is on Zubie’s stick.

“It’s up to him now,” Stars coach Dave Tippett said for the second straight day Saturday. “Zubie is a special player. When he comes to me and tells me he’s ready to play, then he’s in the lineup.”

Stars Health Update

from Five for Fighting,

Sergei Zubov skated, in full pads, with most of his teammates today. Dave Tippett said that it’s a big positive that he took the full practice. Yes, it sounds like Zubov is a go at some point in the second round. When that is, exactly, we’re not sure yet. But the potential of his return has to make Stars fans giddy.

Philippe Boucher, however, isn’t anywhere near skating.

Procedure Helps Zubov To Heal Quicker

from Tracey Myers at Five for Fighting,

Sergei Zubov had a “procedure” done overseas to fix “lingering problems from a sports hernia,” according to coach Dave Tippett on Thursday morning. Zubov will fly back to Dallas tomorrow, and the Stars will re-evaluate after that. This procedure apparently, according to Tippett, “allows him to come back quicker.”

Now what constitutes “quicker”? Tippett said he’s unsure when Zubov will actually be back skating, practicing, playing, etc. So we’ll see what shakes out of that.

Stars A Different Team Without Zubov

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

The Stars are a different team without Sergei Zubov – that’s all there is to it.

Zubov averages more than 25 minutes a game and plays like nobody else in the NHL. He is supremely confident with the puck on his stick and he almost dares opponents to come at him on the forecheck, knowing that can only help him get the defense off of its game.

So if he cannot play in the playoffs because of a foot injury or groin injury or some other injury, the Stars will not be as good.

Zubov Sees A Specialist

from Five for Fighting,

The news doesn’t sound too good on defenseman Sergei Zubov. He didn’t skate today, as he went to see specialists for his ongoing injuries. And won’t skate for the next few days. Coach Dave Tippett called the situation “a concern.” When asked if the problem was the foot or the groin, Tippett said, “all of the above.”

Stars Dmen Getting Closer To Return

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Neither Zubov nor Boucher has battled an injury this close to the playoffs, so they both are curious to see how they handle the balancing act of getting healthy and ramping up their intensity with the rest of the team.

“I don’t know how many games it will take, because I’ve never done this,” Zubov said. “I guess that’s the tough part.”

Boucher, about two weeks short of his 35th birthday, said he’s encouraged by the recent 38-game rehabilitation period that he used to get his left shoulder healthy. Boucher was out for almost half of the season and returned to play four games before injuring the right shoulder.

Zubov Out Another 3-4 Weeks

via Five for Fighting,

Sergei Zubov had a screw inserted into his injured foot and will be out 3-4 weeks, according to coach Dave Tippett. Zubov had apparently gone to a specialist who told him to get this fixed now.

The Stars were hoping Zubov would be back on the ice sometime this week. Instead, they’re keeping their fingers crossed that he gets some work in before the playoffs.

update 5:11pm, Just received a release from the Stars, stating Zubov will not even skate for 3-4 weeks, so his return to the lineup could be 4-6 weeks.

Lehtinen (sports hernia) and Jokinen (knee) are skating and are targeting the area around the All-Star Game (Jan. 27) for their returns. The Silent Dman

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via Yahoo,

He’s never won a Norris Trophy. Actually, he’s never even been runner-up. He’s third in career points among active defencemen. His passing game is among the very best in the league. He’s routinely among the leading offensive defencemen in the league. Right now he actually leads all NHL defencemen in scoring.

So why is it Dallas Stars veteran Sergei Zubov doesn’t get the same kind of attention as perennial Norris Trophy candidates Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Pronger or Scott Niedermayer?
