Sean O’Donnell Hanging Up His Skates

And just like that, Sean O'Donnell is going from grizzled, veteran NHLer to full-fledged rookie.
Wtih his wife seven and half months pregnant, the 41-year-old O’Donnell is nearing his first experience at fatherhood with baby No. 1 on the way.
"I’ve always wanted to be a father," O’Donnell told ESPN.com Wednesday after deciding to retire as an NHL player. "I think this will take some of the sting out of retirement. I’m just so excited and looking forward to fatherhood."
One of the NHL’s most popular teammates and a throwback in the way he approached the game, the longtime defenseman is calling it quits after failing to draw any interest from NHL teams this week when camps opened.
The final decision was made Wednesday morning.

Putting The Union First

Sean O'Donnell began his NHL career in the lockout-shortened season of 1994-95 and knows very well he may see it end by yet another lockout.
The 41-year-old unrestricted free agent understands the facts. Of the players that played 40 or more games in 2003-04( before the year-long lockout of 2004-05), 121 of them did not return in 2005-06.
O’Donnell knows he might very well be one of the many lockout casualties this time around.
"Even if the lockout ends quickly, there’s still no guarantees that I’m going to find work this year," O’Donnell told ESPN.com Wednesday. "And if I don’t, I think I had a pretty good career. But you can say 100 percent sure that if this goes long or we miss the whole year, then my career is done. But it’s one of those things where you have to think what’s best for the union."
The defenseman, as popular a teammate as there has been during his 17 NHL seasons, is willing to sacrifice his own wellbeing for what he believes is right.

Ducks Need To Maintain Their Focus

“It was Cup or bust last year. Every practice, everything we did, that was our focus,” defenseman Sean O’Donnell said.
“And this year we haven’t been able to… call it human nature, call it whatever you want to call it, we haven’t been able to get that focus for extended periods of time. We’ve done it at times. We’ve been really good sometimes and looked like our old team. More often than not we haven’t.”
