Caps are Still the Caps, Which is Bad News for Everyone Else

Of all five Southeast Division clubs, the Washington Capitals of 2010-11 will look the most like themselves from a year ago, having added only a spattering of depth to the lineup that captured the President’s Trophy last season. Alas, as the reigning division champ and still the clear-cut class of the division, if it ain’t broke, well, you know… But a first-round playoff exit thanks to Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens left an awful taste in the mouths of Bruce Boudreau’s squad, meaning improvements are in order this year for sure. (Or else?)

Carolina coach Paul Maurice did say the injury is not related to Brind’Amour’s knee problems….

The Mindset Of A Fighter

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

(Scott) Walker, beginning his 14th NHL season, concedes he literally fought his way into the league. In his first three full seasons, with the Vancouver Canucks, he had 433 penalty minutes in 186 games.

“I have a little bit of a temper,” he said, smiling. “Sometimes, I forget what happens out there. I say some things or do some things I don’t remember.

“People say, ‘Oh, you’re not scared.’ I’m scared every game. You play scared. There are big guys out there and you can get run over. But that’s how you play—you can feed off the fear.”

“I don’t like being that hot-headed, but I think sometimes your faults are the reason you make it,” he said. “To be honest, it got me in the league and it has helped me stay here.”

Walker May Be Facing Suspension

from the News & Observer,

Scott Walker may be facing a suspension after the Carolina Hurricanes forward head-butted Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher in the face during a fight on Wednesday night.

After Walker collided with Senators goalie Martin Gerber early in the second period of Carolina’s 6-0 loss, Fisher fought Walker and cut him under the left eye. Walker head-butted Fisher, earning a match penalty for attempt to injure. Fisher said he chipped one tooth and may have lost another.

Walker was ejected from the game and now faces an automatic review from the NHL.

“It was cheap. It caught me off guard,” Fisher said. “I’m sure he will get some games for it. He ran the goalie. He made no attempt to get away, and I just wanted to let him know he can’t do that.”

Scott Walker Still In Pain

from the News & Observer,

More than two weeks after the Carolina Hurricanes forward tore cartilage in his chest, Walker is still in excruciating pain. He has no idea when he’ll be able to sleep comfortably, let alone ride an exercise bike, lift weights or get back on the ice.

“I wear a brace around my chest that holds it, and that feels the best,” Walker said Sunday. “Other than that, I’m just getting to the point where I can get in and out of bed without too much discomfort. It’s frustrating because every day you wake up and hope it’s going to be better. It’s just one of those things where they told me it’s going to take some time.”

continued... I saw the injury occur and thought to myself, this is not good.  Scott could barely move his upper body without being in pain.
