Classic Brian Burke

from TSN,

Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke said Monday he's glad struggling forward Sam Bennett is playing in Calgary and not facing the media scrutiny of Toronto.

Bennett picked up his first point of the season on Thursday and now owns just one assist through 16 games. The 21-year-old has been moved from centre to left wing as Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan looks to spark him toward his 18-goal form from 2015-16.

Burke said Monday the team still has full faith in Bennett to turn things around, but is glad the 2014 fourth- overall pick isn't dealing with the media circus Burke dealt with while general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"If he were in Toronto, they would have traded him 70 times, shot him six times, condemned his parents four times," Burke said facetiously on TSN 1050's Landsberg in the Morning. "Sam has had a tough start. We really think the world of this young man and he's going to be fine....

As a whole, Burke said he believes the Toronto media has a different attitude towards their team than the media in other cities.

"The problem [in Toronto] is there's a 100 people in the dressing room after practice and when the team loses, 80 of them are picking up the biggest rock they can find. That's the problem here. There's actually a significant chunk of the media that want you to fail. We don't have that in Calgary. We don't have that in Edmonton. It's a different vibe, it's a different tone."

Sometimes it’s all about the…parallax?

Sportnset's John Shannon explains why the Calgary Flames weren't credited with a goal on Sam Bennett's would-be goal attempt on Tuesday evening. It's about something called parallax.

From Merriam-Webster:

Definition of PARALLAX:  the apparent displacement or the difference in apparent direction of an object as seen from two different points not on a straight line with the object; especially :  the angular difference in direction of a celestial body as measured from two points on the earth's orbit

The wining and dining period and draft’s uncertainty make for great theatre, but not the best draft

One really begets the other here, so bear with me:

Via Chris Nichols, Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher spoke with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Michael Russo about the free agent wining and dining period, which is clearly very good in terms of sensing the "fit" for players with various organizations, but isn't necessarily fascinating in terms of the way that it's driving players' "market values" into the stratosphere...

Cue Fletcher: “I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several agents of pending UFAs and try to get a sense of who may have interest in coming to Minnesota and talk about different roles and whether what we have to offer them fits from a role and an ice time standpoint with what they’re looking at. There’s been some ones that may work out, there’s been some ones that clearly won’t work out. But that’s good. I wasn’t really involved in the shopping period last year, but it’s been great. It gives you the sense where instead it used to be July 1 it was such a battle to sign guys. You were competing with other teams to sign players. It wasn’t like you were spending time interviewing players to get their idea of an ideal role. We weren’t having these conversations you might assume we were having. A lot of times you had to make quick decisions and you were throwing money around. So the great thing about the shopping period is you can say, hey this is what we have. This is the type of role. This is the type of fit. Does that interest you?”

And the lack of consensus as to who-goes-where from picks 1 to 4 to the utter mess of players who could be drafted anywhere from 5th to 40th means that we could see a flurry of trades to move up and/or down (and a first round that takes four or five hours starting tonight at 7), as NHL.com's Dan Rosen notes...
