Rookies to Watch

Storylines surrounding the NHL’s second season focus on players who’ve had long, illustrious careers, but have been unable to reach the NHL’s tallest hill (see Teemu Selanne in ‘07 and Jeremy Roenick this year); not about players trying to claim the grail their first time around.

Heck, most of the Calder candidates (Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Peter Mueller, Tobias Enstrom, Sam Gagner) didn’t even make the round of 16.

With that said, there are still several youngsters who will play key roles during this season’s run to the Cup. Here are five fab freshmen to keep your peepers peeled for:

Mueller—Rookie of the Month

via the Phoenix Coyotes:

The National Hockey League announced today that Phoenix Coyotes forward Peter Mueller has been named NHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Mueller led all rookies in scoring for the month with 6-8-14 in 14 games as the Coyotes surged to a 9-4-1 record in January.

Rookies Around the NHL

Here’s a team-by-team look at NHL rookies who are making some noise this season:

ANAHEIM
There isn’t a Calder candidate in Anaheim; left winger Drew Miller was leading the Ducks rookies with two goals and five points in 26 NHL games played through Jan. 28. Bobby Ryan, the second overall pick behind Sidney Crosby in 2005, made his big-league debut this season and had three goals and five points in 13 games.

ATLANTA
The Thrashers feature one of the most surprising rookies of 2007-08 in Swedish defenseman Tobias Enstrom. He’s among the freshmen leaders in assists and ice time, and may make it onto the Calder ballot.

10 Rookies to Watch

We’re a long way from that end-of-season balloting for the Calder Trophy.  No telling which child shall lead them all at this point.  But here are 10 names to watch as the weeks unfold:

1) Andrew Cogliano, Edmonton, C. —The 25th pick overall in the 2005 draft, Cogliano played college hockey last season at Michigan, and picked up 28 points in 39 games.  He is a bit small (5-10/185), but his speed and skill level, combined with the Oil’s dire need for offense, won him a roster spot.  He led all rookies in scoring (1-2—3) through the first weekend.
