Steve Langdon’s Only NHL Point Came While Wearing Bobby Orr’s Hockey Pants

from Leo Roth of the Democrat & Chronicle,

During his five seasons with the Rochester Amerks, newest Hall of Famer Steve Langdon played 11 games in the NHL with the parent Boston Bruins

His NHL debut on April 3, 1975 against the Buffalo Sabres could not have been more memorable.

Called up that morning by Bruins coach Don Cherry, it took Langdon and trainer Nate Agnello four hours to make the hour-and-a-half trip to downtown Buffalo due to a major snowstorm.

o Langdon’s relief, the game was delayed and they beat the Bruins to the arena.

Needing gear in Bruins’ colors, Langdon got a helmet here, a pair of gloves there. He even was tossed a pair of spare pants to wear that belonged to none other than Bobby Orr.

With Boston short players, Cherry used Langdon with Andre Savard and Don Marcotte on a regular shift. They often found themselves paired against the French Connection, the Sabres' famed line of Gil Perreault, Rick Martin and Rene Robert.

“I played the whole game trying to cover Rick Martin,’’ Langdon said....

“I was behind the goal line, and Jim Schoenfeld rams me into boards,’’ Langdon said. “The puck was there, I kicked it behind the net to Don Marcotte, he tries to center it out, and it hits the goalie (Gerry Desjardins) on his pad or skate and goes in the net - from behind the goal line. That was a perfect assist I gave him.’’

Michael Nylander had the puck near the boards during an AHL game for his Rochester in Grand Rapids back Brendan Smith took the bullet. Rigging took offense at the Swede who fell to the ice in pain.

I had poked the puck down when I was tackled into the boards. The player was almost over my head. The only model. I thought I had broken collarbone in fact. It did not feel good at all, “said Nylander.

38-year-old could get the ice under their own steam but then asked about getting to go to hospital where he was X-ray. Once in the hospital bed, the doctors came then with a shock clearance.

There are two neck vertebrae that have been broken. I do not know how bad it is but the doctors will operate on me soon so we’ll see after the surgery.
