Cote Done For The Season

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,

Ten days after dislocating his right ring finger in a fight with New York Islanders rookie Joel Rechlicz, Cote underwent surgery Tuesday that will sideline for 10-12 weeks.

Cote, the Flyers leader in penalty minutes with 174 before the arrival of Daniel Carcillo, injured his finger when he got it caught in the jersey of Rechlicz during a tugging match March 28….

With Cote out, the Flyers have a few options for their fourth line. Andreas Nodl is playing there now with center Darroll Powe and Carcillo. In 35 games for the Flyers, Nodl has one goal, three assists and is a minus-12.

“I think Nodl’s played OK for us,” Holmgren said. “We have other options if we get to that point. We’ll play it by ear.”

Questionable Character

from Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun,

A banner supporting the Hells Angels in Winnipeg. A link to a family member who’s a full-fledged member of the outlaw motorcycle club.

These are the things you’ll find on Winnipeg NHLer Riley Cote’s MySpace page….

But the head of the Winnipeg Police Association and a university criminologist say he hasn’t used good judgment on his internet site.

There, you’ll find a banner that reads, Support Red and White, Winnipeg, a moniker for the Hells Angels. There’s also a link to his cousin, Sean Wolfe, a member who’s had several run-ins with the law.

“It certainly makes you wonder about the suitability of the guy as a role model for aspiring hockey players,” Winnipeg Police Association president Mike Sutherland said yesterday.

Update 3:01pm ET: A response from Riley Cote (and words from the NHL at Globe & Mail),

“It shouldn’t be an issue right now in the Stanley Cup playoffs,” he said after the Flyers’ morning skate in preparation for the opening game of the Eastern Conference final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I can’t believe someone would stoop so low to bring that up now.  [Wolfe] is my cousin.. He’s my family. What do you want me to do?I can’t change anything about it,” Cote said. “I support him.”

Cote Suspended 3 Games - Flyers “Under Watch”

From Ed Moran at the Philadelphia News,

The Flyers have been put on notice by the NHL.

After Riley Cote was handed a three-game suspension for a head shot to Dallas forward Mat Niskanen in Saturday’s game, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren that the league would be watching the Flyers closely.

“I talked to [Bettman] today. He thinks, like I do, that these are different coincidences, different situations, that have to be viewed differently, but the question was raised about ramifications if it happens again,” Holmgren told the Daily News. “So obviously we’re under watch.”

Another Flyer Suspension Likely

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Philadelphia Flyer forward Riley Cote is likely to be suspended for his match penalty at 17:46 of the third period in Dallas’s 4-1 win over the Flyers on Saturday.

Cote delivered a high head shot against Dallas defenceman Matt Niskanen. Any player assessed a match penalty is automatically suspended pending a review by the league. It will be a shock if Cote isn’t suspended by the league.
