Rickard Rakell Could See His Offensive Numbers Increase Under Dallas Eakins

from Elliott Teaford of the OC Register,

Rickard Rakell didn’t enjoy playing in Randy Carlyle’s old-school offensive system. It was too predictable, too restrictive and led to a significant drop in the left wing’s production last season, when he scored only 18 goals after consecutive seasons of 30 or more.

The Ducks scored an NHL-low 199 goals, which helped to explain why they finished sixth in the eight-team Pacific Division and failed to advance to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2012. It also helped to explain why Carlyle was fired as coach and replaced by Dallas Eakins.

Change has been good, according to Rakell.

“It’s a different energy around the whole team, getting this practice facility and all the seriousness about everything when it comes to food, sleep, recovery and practice,” Rakell said. “You can really notice the difference. They’ve given us all the tools. For us, everybody is just excited.

“We don’t have anything to lose.”

Video- Drake Caggiula Concussed By Rickard Rakell Hit

via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times,

The Blackhawks lost a key part of their top line in the 4-3 win over Anaheim on Wednesday. Left wing Drake Caggiula suffered a concussion in the second period when Ducks forward Rickard Rakell smashed him into the glass as Caggiula chased down a puck.

Caggiula stayed down for a minute before being helped off the ice and went immediately to the locker room. The Hawks have no initial indication of the severity of the concussion, though coach Jeremy Colliton said there was no additional injury on the play.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Colliton said. “It’s tough to tell. Sometimes it looks terrible and you’re back right away, and sometimes it looks innocent and it takes forever. So we’ll see.”

Meet Katie Hawley

from Emily Kaplan of ESPN,

In a restaurant nestled in the lobby of the Hyatt Hotel, Rickard Rakell sits down for lunch with his guest, Katie Hawley. He's the Anaheim Ducks' All-Star, a 24-year-old Swedish center who leads his team with 36 points this season. She's a 17-year-old California girl who loves shopping sprees and the beach. He made his NHL debut at 19 and has yet to finish his high school degree; she's taking time off from AP classes and writing college scholarship essays to be in Tampa.

But as Rakell picks at braised short ribs and Hawley munches on a burger, any perceived difference between them melts away. They realize that they're both close to their mothers; Rakell FaceTimes his mom, Annika, who's back in Sweden, every night. Not only do both Rickard and Katie like sitcoms, especially Modern Family, but they also both watch them with subtitles. That's the way Rakell became accustomed to watching American TV shows growing up in Sweden. Hawley does so because her hearing isn't so great these days.

Over the next hour, conversation comes easily for the two, as Rakell does everything he can to make Hawley smile. When she laments that she's "never been a typical high school girl," Rakell deadpans: "Don't worry. Neither have I."

Hawley has been battling cancer since she was 9.

The Draft Story Of Rickard Rakell

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Watching Rickard Rakell deftly navigate through traffic with his soft hands and creative vision in this his breakthrough NHL season, one wonders how he went just 30th overall in the 2011 draft.

The answer is just another chapter in the Anaheim Ducks' draft mythology.

Consider the events of that Friday evening in St. Paul, Minn., five years ago when Anaheim held the No. 22 overall pick. The Ducks had targeted Stefan Noesen, and when he went No. 21 overall to Ottawa they shifted gears.

"That's when we moved back,'' Ducks GM Bob Murray recalled this week.

Murray traded the pick to Toronto in exchange for the Maple Leafs' No. 30 and No. 39 overall picks. Toronto drafted Tyler Biggs at No. 22, while the Ducks took Rakell at No. 30 and John Gibson at No. 39.

That's how the top franchises in this league stay on top, with days like that.
