An Interview With Team Italy Head Coach Rick Cornacchia

Hi Rick,

First off, thanks for taking the time to speak with Kuklaskorner.

1. As a player, you suited up for HC Alleghe of the Italian A League from 1974-1976. How did your experience playing in Italy prepare you for coaching the National Team?

The playing experience allowed me to learn the following: Italian hockey mentality, get to know the people running the league (some of the same people are still involved), become familiar with the areas where hockey is played in Italy and re-learn Italian.

2. In 1989-90, you won the Memorial Cup, while coaching the Oshawa Generals. What was the road to the championship like?
It was a great “ride” looking back on it. When you are immersed in the playoffs there is very little time to enjoy the experience. The coaching staff is too busy preparing for the next game, the next series, keeping the players focused & prepared, dealing with injuries and distractions. We had a great group of players that were committed to winning. The leadership on the team was outstanding Ian Frazer was a great captain he had a support group that was exceptional Grieve, Busillo, O’Hagan, Armstrong, Banika, Skalde, Donaldson, Lindros that all had been are became captains. This group made the difference and allowed the team to win the Memorial Cup.

Columbus Invites Matvichuk To Camp

from Puck-rakers,

The Blue Jackets have invited defenseman Richard Matvichuk to training camp as a non-roster tryout. The team is still awaiting word on whether the 35-year-old Matvichuk will accept.

He most notably made two Stanley Cup finals appearances with Ken Hitchcock in Dallas in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, but has played in only one NHL regular-season game in the past two years.

Matvichuk missed all but one game of the 2006-07 season recovering from back surgery. Last season, he played 42 games with New Jersey’s AHL affiliate Lowell, contributing a goal and three assists.

Devils Will Move Matvichuk Soon

from the NY Post,

Lamoriello indicated he’d pursue a deal rather than seek waivers on Matvichuk, who is slated to earn $1.3 million this season. He is in the last year of a contract he signed as an unrestricted free agent July 12, 2004, before the last lockout and before the advent of the “new” NHL.

Lamoriello, asked if Matvichuk was not suited to Sutter’s more aggressive system, said, “I would have to say that, yes.”

Martin Brodeur said, “He proved last year when he stepped in that he could do the job. He’s still a pretty gritty player, blocking shots and being mean. His speed has a lot to do with it.”
