Is Sidney Crosby still the number one pick in fantasy leagues?
Mere hours after my posting suggesting that Crosby should be the first overall pick, Josh Rimer’s tweet about Crosby’s unlikeliness to be in the Penguins’ lineup to start the season was making the rounds.

Though I try to avoid posting a lot of the same things that you might have already seen on the Penguins official site, I did receive the embed codes to the videos from today’s pressers from my predecessor, Tony Ferrante, so I figured that I would post them for you all. He was good enough to send them… I will post them!
I already wrote about Shero’s presser and shared pertinent quotes, but there is no harm in seeing the entire interviews… at this point, the most interesting commentary contained there in is likely to be Bylsma’s thoughts on some other injured players like Dustin Jeffrey and recent signee Jason Williams. However, it is worth hearing the optimism that I mentioned in Shero’s voice for yourselves…

Ray Shero Addresses Crosby Situation

Though Ray Shero issued a couple of statements last night via phone call or text to a couple of the newspapers in Pittsburgh, he officially met with the media this afternoon to shed some light on the Sidney Crosby situation.
Not that Shero has ever struck me as a worry wart to begin with, but his demeanor wasn’t that of a general manager who felt that he might be going into the season without his best and brightest star. If anything he came across as optimistic.
“I think he has progressed really well this summer,” Shero said. “He’s happy with his progress. Training camp is a month away, so there’s no expectation for me that he won’t be ready or will be ready. He’s doing his usual routine. He’ll probably be in a week before camp starts, and we’ll evaluate him then to see how he’s doing.

Shero Should Be GM Of The Year Candidate

I called Ray Shero on Thursday to ask him what he did to tick off the NHL’s other general managers. They are the primary voters for the general manager of the year award. Shero isn’t one of the three finalists, who were announced Wednesday….
Let’s review as the Penguins are just one win against the Tampa Bay Lightning from advancing to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs without stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin:
• James Neal came in a Shero trade in February. He scored the winning goal against the Lightning in double overtime in Game 4 Wednesday night. “A blast from the side boards, top shelf,” Shero said. “Not many of our guys can do that.”
• Zybnek Michalek and Paul Martin were Shero signing as free agents in July. They are half of the best top-four defensemen in the NHL along with Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang. “That’s how we win games—with defense and timely scoring,” Shero said. “Those guys have been invaluable for us.”

“I haven’t talked to all the teams, but I have kept in touch with a few guys. With our team I have a pretty good idea of what we want to do so I’m not contacting every team. You do that a week or two before the deadline to make sure you’re covering everything off, doing your due diligence, but it hasn’t been that active now. As you get through the All-Star break it tends to pick up and we’ll see that over the next few weeks of course.”

Beating The Ray Shero Drum

We knew Penguins general manager Ray Shero was good at his job long before his terrific signings of free-agent defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek Thursday. The team’s run to the Stanley Cup final in 2008 and its Cup win in ‘09 are pretty good proof. But we didn’t find out just how great Shero is until after the Chicago Blackhawks won the Cup this spring. The champagne wasn’t even dry in Chicago when the Blackhawks traded key players Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, Colin Fraser, Ben Eager and Brent Sopel because of NHL salary-cap concerns.
Contrast that to the Penguins who have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Martin, Michalek and Marc-Andre Fleury signed through at least the 2012-13 season. It will be disappointing if they don’t win at least one more Cup during that time.
No wonder Shero said Friday morning after doing five-year deals with Martin and Michalek for a total of $45 million: “I slept good last night.”

Q: What did you learn last year about your core players?
A: They’ve very resilient, and I didn’t just learn that. We’ve shown that the past two seasons, especially last season with all the injuries and adversity, including the slow start. These players know how to handle tough spots. I look at our game in Ottawa last season on Thanksgiving: We were three games under .500 and down, 0-2, on the road to a team that had the best record in hockey at the time. We won that game, and it was the start of getting it going on the right track

Hossa to Test Free Agency

Marian Hossa has declined an offer to sign a long-term deal with the Penguins and will test free agency.
General manager Ray Shero said today after the NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place that Hossa, a star right wing acquired Feb. 26, will offer his services to other teams as an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Scouting Played a Role

How did these teams end up on hockey’s biggest stage? In part, super scouting.
A well-used hockey saying goes like this: “Great players make great coaches.” That’s true.
The corollary: Great scouts make great general managers. (Ask Wings GM Ken Holland.) Take it a step further, and scouts make GMs look good by acquiring the right players either through the draft, trades or signings.
It’s not a secret: Scouting is the life blood of any successful hockey team.

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero participated in a NHL teleconference today. Below is the transcript from the Q&A.
Q. Being swept up in the middle of this playoff run, have you had a chance to step back and appreciate what your team has done, the rebuilding process that has gone on in the last couple of years?
RAY SHERO: I think so. In between every round, there’s a different challenge, the first one being Ottawa, which was, honestly, a little nerve-racking. They were a team that beat us last year quite handily in five games. Trying to see how the team would react. Getting the early goal from Gary Roberts in Game 1, that was great.
But it’s been a great experience for our club here. Every round we’ve gone on, I think we’ve got more confidence. Hopefully we’re going to be ready for Saturday night.

Earlier today, the Pittsburgh Penguins made general manager Ray Shero available for a media conference call. The Penguins currently sit first overall in the Eastern Conference with 97 points, and six points ahead of New Jersey and the New York Rangers in the race for first place in the Atlantic division. They are looking to win their first divisional title since 1997-98.
Here is the transcript from the Q&A.
Q. Watching the game last night, you had Crosby with Dupuis and Hossa. What was the thinking in combining Dupuis because a lot of people would have thought he would have been a third or fourth line guy, and next thing is Crosby, first game back, talk about his soreness level or how he came out of the game, Hossa missing the third period.

Out With The Old

But the feelings of veterans shouldn’t matter when a team is based on youth. Unless the Penguins arrive a bit early, Recchi, Roberts and Sydor will almost certainly not be around when the team wins its next Stanley Cup. So who cares how they feel? Respect them. But don’t placate them. Don’t treat them with kid gloves when they play badly.
If anybody feels Roberts is still worth anything, Shero should trade him. Try calling north of the border, Ray. If his misguided raging-bull style on the ice is any indication, Roberts is not handling his decline well.
Recchi and Sydor can still help in lesser roles. Just make sure they have lesser roles.

Penguins Need Help - Not Just In Goal

The most fascinating aspect of the Penguins’ struggle is that it provides us the first opportunity to gauge what kind of administrator general manager Ray Shero will be. Because this is his first GM job, we have no history to review.
But my hunch is Shero will be able to walk the fine line between aggressiveness and panic. I believe he will continue to look for scoring wingers, and I believe he will continue to be patient with Fleury. I believe he will be more patient with Fleury than his coach seems to be. I think if Shero believed Fleury needed an older goalie playing beside him, he would have acquired one last summer.

Shero Has No Plans To Tear Apart The Penguins

The Penguins have sputtered through the first 16 games of this season, and it remains to be seen what, if anything, general manager Ray Shero is going to do about it.
Shero has made it quite clear what he won’t do.
He won’t fire coach Michel Therrien.
He won’t replace Marc-Andre Fleury as the team’s No. 1 goalie.
