Patrick Roy Fined for Pea-Brain Remarks

From the CP via the Globe & Mail:

Patrick Roy has been fined by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for being overly critical of a rival GM.

The league slapped Quebec Remparts head coach and GM with a $2,000 fine Wednesday for making ”inappropriate remarks.” Roy told reporters in Quebec City on Saturday that Shawinigan Cataractes GM Martin Mondou ”has a brain the size of a pea.”

The remarks were made after Mondou called for tighter security at the Pepsi Colisee after his players were showered with beer and other debris by fans when leaving the ice at the end of a game. Mondou said the Remparts’ home rink was dangerous.

Ways to Follow Junior Hockey

If you’re interested in watching or listening to more hockey than you ever have before, here are some ways to follow the junior hockey team of your choosing:

The WHL is offering WHL Live. You can buy anything from a single archived game to live coverage of every team in the league. There is an early bird special going on right now that will save you $10. So if you’re interested, go for it.

The OHL does not appear to have such an offer at this time. Most teams do have radio broadcasts, however, and you can find the list of those that do and the station/website that covers them on the OHL website.

I don’t speak French right now since my first class in that subject isn’t until next semester, but I did manage to Google Translate my way to finding that the QMJHL has a similar offer for live streaming that the WHL has, though their prices are a bit lower. Odds that the broadcasts are in English? One in a million. (So you’re telling me there’s a chance!)

Hockey Isn’t Cuddly

From Pierre LeBrun at Sportsnet,

Fighting used to be ingrained in hockey culture. These days, however, there seems to be more taste for a kinder, cuddlier game. So is it time for fighting to go?

I can only shake my head at the attention the Jonathan Roy story has received in this country this week.

When did the tree huggers take over this bloody country? When did we all become such bleeding hearts that a junior hockey brawl shocked our collective senses so badly we became outraged?

Update 2:38pm ET: Gare Joyce at ESPN addresses how Patrick Roy’s situation may ultimately affect his legacy with the Montreal Canadiens.

Willing Combatants Only

From Jeff Marek at CBC,

Well, by now we’ve all seen the video of Patrick Roy’s son Jonathan attacking Chicoutimi netminder Bobby Nadeau.  If you haven’t seen the clip yet, have a look.  QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau will rule on the incident sometime Tuesday.

We all have our opinion on the incident itself. It appears that Patrick Roy motioned to his son to skate down the ice and attack the other goalie, who wanted no part of the encounter as is evidenced by the video.

I can never condone that.

Patrick Roy Coaching Incident

From the Canadian Press,

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey league fined the Quebec Remparts $2,000 Thursday following an incident involving head coach Patrick Roy.

Roy, the NHL’s all-time leader in wins by a goaltender, earned an extreme game misconduct penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after confronting the officials following Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Roy was not suspended for the incident.
