The Home Team In Prague

from the Blueshirts Blog at Newsday,

The papers haven’t been signed yet, but the Rangers are all but signed, sealed and delivered to Prague to open next season with a two-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

And that pair of games will only comprise half of the NHL’s season-opening plan for 2008-09. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators are expected to open their season with two games in Stockholm.

Sens May Open Season In Sweden

from the Ottawa Sun,

A league source confirmed to the Sun last night that the Senators are negotiating with the NHL to open the season Oct. 4-5 at the Globen Arena in Stockholm.

Reports in Swedish newspapers yesterday indicated the club’s opponent would be Sidney Crosby’s Penguins, but negotiations are ongoing with the NHL.

While the Senators had been linked to a game in Prague, it’s believed the NHL has turned its focus to a Lightning-Rangers matchup because of the Czech connection with New York’s Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka.

Some Rangers Want A “Home” Game

from the NY Daily News,

Having opened this season in London with a two-game series between Anaheim and Los Angeles, the NHL is close to awarding the opener for next season to a more avid hockey country - the Czech Republic. As you might imagine, there are several prominent Rangers who are dying to be a part of such a venture.

“I would love it,” winger Martin Straka said. “The Rangers are the team in the Czech Republic, because of Jags (Jaromir Jagr), of course. I think it would only make sense for us to go.”

The Cost Of Playing In Prague

from the Prague Post,

While Šafařík refused to elaborate on the budget for bringing the NHL to Prague, Tejkal revealed the event would be as expensive as hosting the Final Four men’s basketball tournament, which brought Europe’s best basketball clubs to Prague’s Sazka Arena in April 2006 and cost 50 million Kč ($2.6 million)....

Šafařík said that in the end money will be the key factor in deciding whether or not the NHL comes to Prague.
“We’re now awaiting the final word from the NHL about their financial conditions,” he said. “It’s obvious that the event must fit into a certain budget. Still, we’re quite optimistic that we’ll be able to bring the NHL to Prague.”

Report: Sens and Pens to Open ‘08 in Prague

The Hockey News is reporting that the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins will drop the puck in Prague on a compressed schedule next season.

Sources have told the Hockey News that the season will be pushed back by about a week and will begin either October 9th or 10th.  In order to accommodate the change, the league will further compress the schedule early in the season rather than late in the season to avoid the season running one week longer.
