A Trio Of Devils Information

image

Now that school has started for me, the ease of getting to a computer becomes limited to early in the morning, and very late at night. For my absense on the website for the past couple of days I apologize. Now that things are slowly calming down, I figured I would get back into things here on KK. I have news on the Devils bankruptcy rumor, some player who will be joining the Devils on a tryout, and some other interesting bits of information.

Sykora Will Soon Have UFA Status

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

The Wild is close to cutting all ties with Petr Sykora.

Sykora, 33, who’s been away from the team since being placed on waivers Jan. 19, was officially assigned to the Houston Aeros today.
However, Sykora has officially declined to report. The two sides have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, and once approved by the NHL in the next day or two, Sykora will immediately become an unrestricted free agent .

In essence, Sykora will be free to sign with any team before the March 3 trade deadline and the Wild will be free of the remaining $600,000 or so of Sykora’s contract and salary-cap hit.

Another Twitter Attack

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Agent Allan Walsh continues to call out the Wild via his Twitter account.

Less than a week after tweeting that coach Todd Richards is “treating [Petr] Sykora with less respect than a rookie,” Walsh sent out a string of Sykora tweets from http://www.twitter.com/walsha Friday reciting statistics, such as 302 career goals, 677 career points, 10 consecutive 20-plus goal seasons ... “leader, winner, intense competitor.”

Although this wasn’t a direct attack, make no mistake: Walsh is taking aim at Richards. Sykora has been scratched five games in a row, most recently Thursday in St. Louis when Richards dressed James Sheppard, a scratch the previous four games.

Sykora Treatment Questioned

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

He was told this morning he wasn’t playing but that he still had to skate warmups. James Sheppard did not have to skate warmups. Somebody asked me on Twitter during warmups if he was playing because he was warming up, and I replied, “No. They treat him like a rookie.”

Whether that was appropriate of me to say or not, I said it and I said it because I know the veteran of five Stanley Cup Finals and 900-plus regular season games was told that he had to skate warmups even though there was no intention of playing him.

Later in the game tonight, agent Allan Walsh retweeted my tweet. Then he tweeted, “No, the coach is treating Sykora with less respect than a rookie.” and “Sykora is a healthy scratch for the 2nd game in a row.”

I talked to Allan after the game because Twitter’s obviously public and I couldn’t ignore it, but he didn’t want to comment further publicly.

Wild Players Say Ott Should Be Suspended For Elbow On Sykora

via Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

Wild players all were talking about the hit this morning and how the league “better suspend” Ott. We will see. Unlike Derek Boogaard’s elbow last year on Brandon Prust, there wasn’t an outcry on this one in Canada…

Well, Ott took a leaping elbow into the head on Sykora in my opinion. The league allegedly wants to rid head shots, well, then throw the book at Ott, too. Or maybe Stephane Robidas for his textbook boarding on Mikko Koivu last night that was somehow missed.

Wild Coach Motivating Sykora

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

Regarding scratching Petr Sykora last night, Richards said he was trying to put the best team on the ice. Still, he benched Sykora for Derek Boogaard, who only got five shifts.

On Sykora: “He is a proven scorer, but there’s so much more that goes to playing the game of hockey than just finishing.”

He said the coaches went over those areas with Sykora. But Sykora told us after the coaches haven’t told him anything. Richards said he expects Sykora “to be a professional” since this isn’t the first time he’s been scratched (a lot last second half with Pittsburgh) and “have the attitude of sticking it to the coach.” But Richards said the coaches haven’t made up their mind if Sykora will play tomorrow against the Rangers.

Sykora Signs With Wild

via Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

The Wild signed winger Petr Sykora today to a one-year contract for $1.6 million. The signing leaves the team $800,000 from salary cap, meaning it’ll be much harder for forwards Colton Gillies and Andy Hilbert to make the team.

They Can Still Play, But Where Is The Question

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

The news that Petr Sykora will attend the Minnesota Wild camp on a tryout basis is symbolic of the dilemma facing all the veteran NHL players that didn’t get a contract offer this summer, and opted not to play overseas in Russia:

Do they swallow their pride and - with no guarantees - try to earn a roster spot for the first time in forever? Or do they sit at home and await a firm deal and bide their time that way?

Sykora On A Tryout With The Wild

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants at the Star-Tribune,

I’ve been sitting on this for a couple days for a variety of reasons, but it’s starting to get out there now and not in an accurate way.

As I reported here Sept. 4, the Wild was interested in signing Petr Sykora. After back and forth negotiations last week, Sykora said no. Now Sykora will indeed fly to Minnesota on Tuesday.

But if he passes his physical, he’ll be placed on a pro tryout like unsigned free agent Andy Hilbert. He is not signed, and GM Chuck Fletcher made it very clear to me just now that there is no guarantee to sign him.

He’s got to make the team.

Wild May Make An Offer To Sykora

from Michale Russo of Russo’s Rants,

As I guessed last weekend here, the Wild is considering making a contract offer to free-agent winger Petr Sykora, multiple sources tell me.

GM Chuck Fletcher, who knows Sykora better than most because he had him in Anaheim and Pittsburgh when he was assistant GM in both cities, is weighing the pros and cons of making an offer.

Senators Have Interest In Sykora

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators are keeping their options open up front.

While the club is still holding talks with unrestricted free-agent centre Mike Comrie, league sources say GM Bryan Murray has also held serious discussions with Penguins winger Petr Sykora — also a UFA — and he’s at the top of the Senators’ radar screen if they can trade Dany Heatley before training camp.

The Senators would like a big forward back, but indications are Murray isn’t sure that will happen.

Sykora May Be A Better Fit In Tampa Than Tanguay

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,

It’s not the worst thing in the world for one’s career to play with Lecavalier, especially when you are trying to revive your career, which both Tanguay and Sykora have to do. Much of the talk the past few weeks is about how much Tanguay would help the Lightning. But I say Sykora, who has 53 goals, including 28 on the power play the past two seasons for the Penguins, offers more. And he has more to prove after his playoff flop, though he also had a second-degree shoulder separation.

added 4:13, also from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,

The Lightning was able to rid itself of $6 million in payroll the next two seasons by trading disappointing right wing Radim Vrbata to the Coyotes, the team he left to sign with the Lightning as a free agent. The names of the two players coming back were not immediately available.

added 4:49pm, Regarding the trade, the Lightning get Todd Fedoruk and David Hale in return.

No Rift Between Sykora And Bylsma

from Joe Starky of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Veteran forward Petr Sykora will not return for a third season with the Penguins, but his departure has nothing to do with a supposed rift between he and coach Dan Bylsma, according to Bylsma and Sykora’s agent, Allan Walsh.

A recent report in the Czech newspaper “Aha!” quoted Sykora as saying he did not like Bylsma when the two were teammates with the Anaheim Ducks from 2002-04. The quotes implied that Sykora believed Bylsma had it out for him when they were reunited in February, when Bylsma was hired as Penguins coach.

Walsh said the interview never happened. He said “Aha!” is a sister publication of “Blesk,” a periodical Walsh compared to the National Enquirer, and often publishes its stories.

Sykora Back Home, Thinking Of Leaving The Penguins

Roman Jedlička and Dusan Volejníka at Nova Sport (not translated) report Petr Sykora feels it is in the best interest of both the Penguins and himself that they part ways.  Sykora still wants to play in the NHL for 2-3 years but since Bylsma took over the team, he has witnessed his ice time diminish drastically.

He is still recovering from a broken right foot and won’t be 100% until mid-July.

Direct quote from Sykora (translated)- “It is possible i could stay in Piitsburgh, but I feel it is better for both the Penguins and me that I go to another NHL team.”

thanks to KK friend Roman for the pointer and translation.

KHL Interested In Signing Two Penguins

from Russia Today,

Two players from the Pittsburg Penguins, who took the Stanley Cup last week in a dramatic seven-game thriller against Detroit, may leave the U.S. for KHL this summer, Sportbox.ru reports.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk is interested in Czech Petr Sykora, who played 76 games for the Pens this season, scoring 25 goals and 21 assists.

The club’s contract with the player has expired and, according to his agent, the team is not going to offer him a new agreement….

Another Stanley Cup winner, Miroslav Satan, is wanted in Kazakhstan by Barys hockey club. The Astana team has ready offered a two year contract worth $6 million to the Slovak player.

Off-Day Quotes From Fleury and Sykora

Q. Marc-Andre, someone was telling me that you might have given Al the octopus guy a little squirt with water just as he was doing his twirling thing. If that’s the case, can you describe what the deal was with that?

MARC-ANDRE FLEURY: It was an accident. I just missed my mouth by a little bit. (Laughter) Yep. I don’t know, it was just at the game he does it to us. And after the first two games, I thought I’ll give him a little something back. And we won, so it’s good.

From the Maven’s Desk

If the Penguins are planning to rescue themselves from the State of Oblivion, Crosby might find it necessary to get Malkin and Petr Sykora alone in a room and bang their heads together a few times; followed by a simple, declarative sentence: “I WANT YOU GUYS TO PLAY AS HARD AS I AM, AND BROOKS ORPIK IS.”

and more thoughts from Stan Fischler at Game On

Update 8:16pm ET: At ESPN, Scott Burnside takes a more tempered look at Malkin’s performance woes.

Do or Die

From Dave Molinari at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

“For us, basically, [Game 4] is a do-or-die game,” [Petr Sykora] said. “We know that if we can come up with a win, there is a lot of pressure on them, going into Game 5 [Monday at Joe Louis Arena].

“Basically, the whole Stanley Cup playoffs is going to [come down to] the game [tonight]. We’ve worked so hard to get to this position. This is a big chance for us, to tie it up, 2-2. You never know what’s going to happen then.”

Best Job In Pittsburgh

from the CP,

Petr Sykora didn’t get the most money in this summer’s free agent frenzy, but he may have got the best job.

The 30-year-old Czech signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins and got put on right wing on the first line with NHL most valuable player and scoring leader Sidney Crosby.

Now he just needs show enough in camp to stay on the trio with 20-year-old Crosby and 39-year-old Mark Recchi when the regular season begins.

“There’s not many guys like Sidney in this league and to be able to play with a player like that would be one of the top moments in my career,” Sykora said Tuesday as the Penguins prepared to play their second pre-season game in as many nights against the Montreal Canadiens.
