But you can forgive everybody if the celebration was tempered by the fact winger Bobby Ryan — the club’s hottest player — had to be helped off the ice with 4:14 left in the third after he was smashed into the boards by Columbus defenceman David Savard, who was thrown out and will likely be suspended.
“Bobby brings an offensive skillset that is irreplaceable,” said Anderson. “We’ll have to wait and see what’s going on with him. You hope for the best and you never like seeing guys get hurt.”
While it appeared to be a shoulder for Ryan, the Senators were already without defenceman Patrick Wiercioch. He may have been the fifth player on the club’s roster this season to suffer a concussion after he had to be helped off the ice in the second after being hit by Columbus winger Nick Foligno.
The CP says no update on Ryan post-game...
Ottawa lost Bobby Ryan late in the third after being hit by David Savard and Patrick Wiercioch left early in the second after taking a hit from Nick Foligno. There was no update on either player following the game.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox discussed several topics during their "Saturday Headlines" segment, and they stated that:
1. The NHL's concussion-spotting system was reviewed, and it may move to the Department of Player Safety;
2. There are both rumors of Patrick Marleau going to Colorado and the Avalanche having to rid themselves of Tyson Barrie, and there are rumors about Patrick Wiercoch going to Colorado as well;
3. Cox noted that Martin Brodeur believes that the NHL is going toward larger nets, and that people won't notice them;
4. And Friedman stated that the NHL will decide on whether the All-Star Game has a 3-on-3 format sometime this week.
The 'Battle of Ontario' was rejoined tonight as the Maple Leafs played their home opener against the Ottawa Senators. As they have since 1931, the 48th Highlanders opened the season for the Leafs - but the team chose to come out to the stylings of Metallica, instead:
While some things may stay the same, at least one thing would change. For the first time in 18 years, the inter-Provincial rivalry will not include Daniel Alfredsson. It made for much less booing, but no less scoring.

A tough loss was overshadowed by a terrifying injury Friday night, as Binghamton Senators defenseman Patrick Wiercioch was hospitalized after being hit in the throat by a puck during the first period of the Norfolk Admirals’ 5-1 win at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Wiercioch was struck by a clearing attempt during a power play three minutes and eight seconds into the game. He immediately dropped to the ice and needed several minutes before being helped to the runway by trainer Glen Kinney and captain Mark Parrish.
“I’ve heard that he’s being attended to,” B-Sens coach Kurt Kleinendorst said after the game. “I know he’s in capable hands. We don’t know much more than that. We’ll just keep him in our prayers.”
