Post-Kovalchuk Thrashers Deep on ‘D’, Look to New Faces and Young Guns for Offense

For the Atlanta Thrashers, a team with just one playoff appearance in ten National Hockey League seasons (and not a single post-season victory to their credit), the time for a fresh start was clearly at hand.

By first turning a negative into a positive in moving on from superstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk late last season and then raiding the cabinet of the cap-crunched Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta begins their new era, under both a new general manager and head coach in Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay, with a wealth of promising youth and several veterans with recent championship experience.

They may no longer boast an individual showstopper but that formula wasn’t producing a consistent winner in Blueland anyway (and that alone rarely does as much anywhere). The post-Kovalchuk Thrashers appear to be headed for greener pastures, though there will be that little issue of replacing his 45+ goals, of course.

Patrice Cormier Suspended For Regular Season & Playoffs

from TSN,

The verdict is in.

Rouyn-Noranda Huskies forward Patrice Cormier was suspended for the balance of the season and the playoffs by the QMJHL on Monday.

Cormier, 19, created a firestorm of media attention last week when he elbowed Mikael Tam of the Quebec Remparts in the head, sending Tam into convulsions on the ice and causing him to be taken to hospital with brain trauma and broken teeth.

Patrice Cormier Flying Elbow On Mikael Tam

from RDS (translated)

The stay of Patrice Cormier with the Rouyn-Noranda took an odd tangent Sunday afternoon at the Dave Keon Arena.

Forward originally from Cap-Pelé, New Brunswick, who was playing his third game only with the Huskies, was expelled from the meeting at 3:32 of the overtime period for giving a blow to the head of defender Ramparts Mikael Tam.

The force of the impact was such that the back left the ice in convulsions on a stretcher. However, Tam is out of danger and in stable condition in hospital. He suffered a brain head trauma and lost some teeth. He will remain under observation for at least 48 hours.

added 9:49am, via a Tweet from Bob McKenzie,

This Cormier elbow is sickening on so many levels. I have never been so discouraged about the game of hockey as now.
