Martin Brodeur won’t take part in training camps, but Pat Brisson believes his client will find work

Via The Score's Katie Flynn, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti spoke with Martin Brodeur's agent, Pat Brisson, regarding his client's status. Pat Brisson stated that his client won't attend a team's training camp on a pro try-out, but he believes that his client will find NHL employment:

"Both physically and mentally Marty is ready to have another season,” Brisson told me today. “Training camps are starting next week. There’s no rush. However, once training camp opens and once the season opens in early October, there’s going to be opportunities, I believe, for Marty. It may come early. It may come a little later. … If you look at every season, there’s always a situation that is not perfect. Perhaps, a goaltender will get an injury or a goalie that doesn’t start off the season on the right foot. Now, that doesn’t mean that any team that shows up Marty is going to go. It has to make sense to Marty.”

Brodeur has already said he is willing to be a backup in the right situation – on a team with a good chance to win – though he’d clearly love a chance to be a No. 1, as well. It’s just a matter of waiting for that right situation to arise.

Once the dust settled following the initial free agent frenzy on July 1, Brisson and Brodeur both knew things would be quiet until after training camps opened. (Players report for physicals next Thursday and begin practices the next day.)

“Nothing happens in July and August once free agency is over,” Brisson said.

Brisson also addressed the reports that Brodeur's been contacted by the Montreal Canadiens...

Jonathan Toews talks about his and Patrick Kane’s contract extensions

From the Chicago Sun-Times' Mark Lazerus, presented without comment:

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are going to sign massive contract extensions this summer, possibly as early as July 1. That’s basically a given. It’s also highly likely they’ll do so on the same day, as they did in 2009.

“We’ve been kind of going hand-in-hand almost our entire careers,” Toews said Monday. “When we came in as rookies, and we’ve just been included in the same discussion for a lot of things, namely our second contract, and probably this time again. The chances of that are good. But at the end of the day, he’s got his own needs and his own family, and you have to respect that, as well.”

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman told the Sun-Times earlier this month that he planned to have the deals done by July 1, the first day the two stars and franchise cornerstones are eligible to sign them. Toews didn’t want to put a timetable on it, saying, “We’re in discussions right now, but as far as I know, nothing is concrete.” Both Toews and Kane are represented by agent Pat Brisson.

Late-night trade deadline talk from McKenzie, Dreger and LeBrun

TSN's Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger chatted with the NHL Network's Rob Roe on Tuesday evening, and they made some surprising statements.

  • According to both McKenzie and Dreger, John Tortorella's snub of Roberto Luongo in the Heritage Classic did in fact prompt Luongo's agent, Pat Brisson, to ask if he could speak to several NHL teams about moving his client;
  • The gents also claim that the Canucks want to trade Ryan Kesler and Alex Edler independently of the Luongo situation, with Kesler willing to go to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit Anaheim and possibly other teams (but not the Rangers), and that the Canucks will hold out for the best offer, even if that means trading Kesler at another time;
  • The New York Rangers are still considering re-signing Ryan Callahan, signing and trading him or just trading him;
  • The Buffalo Sabres are at least considering moving Matt Moulson, perhaps to Los Angeles, but Calgary's Mike Camalleri is also another "goal-scoring winger" on the market, as might be Chris Stewart, but the Sabres in particular cannot carry any more salary in making trades;
  • The Sabres may consider moving Christian Ehrhoff or Tyler Myers, and the Red Wings may be interested, specifically in Ehrhoff, but the Wings are in a "transition year," so Ken Holland has to decide whether he's willing to bite on the Sabres' price;
  • And regarding Cammalleri, he, Moulson, Ales Hemsky and Thomas Vanek's futures are somewhat intertwined, with Hemsky and Cammalleri serving as the fall-back plans for the teams that don't land Kesler.

ESPN's Pierre LeBrun also penned a late-evening blog entry updating the Kesler situation, confirming that the Canucks feel no need to "settle" for anything less than their asking price:
