This Is Nico Hischier

from Nico Hischier at The Players' Tribune,

People keep telling me that I make them feel old. Ever since the NHL draft, I’ve been hearing it from the reporters. Then, when I got to New Jersey, I started hearing it from the older players. I guess they see the year I was born and it blows their minds for some reason.

I was born in 1999. I was eight years old when the iPhone came out. People think that is really funny. I don’t know why.

I’ll tell you another story that people think is crazy. When I was 11 years old, my Swiss hockey team came over for the big pee-wee hockey tournament in Quebec City. It was my first time in North America, and I had never seen an NHL game before. So our whole team drove to Ottawa to watch the Senators play the Oilers. We were sitting up so high that we could barely see the puck. We were like two seats from the roof. So we just kept trying to look for number 4 on Edmonton.

We were all like, Wow, that guy is a big deal.

It was Taylor Hall. He had just been the No. 1 pick in the draft. From where we were sitting, he looked really small.

Nico Hischier Wants To Be The Magic Man Part 2

from Dave Caldwell at ESPN,

Hischier's favorite hockey player, and the player he thinks he most resembles on the ice, is Pavel Datsyuk, the 38-year-old legendary left-handed center who played for the Detroit Red Wings for 14 years before joining St. Petersburg SKA in the Kontinental Hockey League last season.

Hischier wears No. 13 because Datsyuk wore No. 13. The Devils will decide later whether Hischier will become only the second player in the team's 35-year history to wear No. 13, but even if he is assigned another number, Hischier said he plans to keep playing like Datsyuk.

"I just really like his game," Hischier said at the Devils' development camp last week. "It's just his two-way game -- he's one of the best defensive centers, and offensively, he's pretty good, too. I try to be a center like Datsyuk."

Hischier was selected first overall by New Jersey at the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago, the first time the Devils had the number one slot in team history. He is the only Swiss-born player to be selected with the top pick in NHL history. In 2016-17 with Halifax (QMJHL), Hischier led all rookies with 38 goals and 48 assists for 86 points in 57 regular-season games and added three goals and four assists in six QMJHL playoff contests. He was named CHL and QMJHL Rookie of the Year, QMJHL Offensive Rookie of the Year, a member of the QMJHL All-Rookie Team, and was awarded with the Mike Bossy Trophy as the QMJHL's Best Professional Prospect. During Day 2 of the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago, Hischier was named the 2017 recipient of the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence, which is given to the candidate who best exemplifies the commitment to excellence through strength and character, competitiveness and athleticism.

The left-shooting forward finished New Jersey's 2017 Development Camp this afternoon. Born January 4, 1999 in Brig, Switzerland, Hischier has represented his home country on multiple occasions in international competition, including when he led his country with seven points at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships in Montreal & Toronto.
